The National Day military parade 70 years ago was exciting. Among them, the bright red battle flag of the Jinan Second Regiment is particularly eye-catching. The highlight of this unit is their division commander, Zhou Zhijian.
From the age of 18, Zhou Zhijian showed his military talent. Chen Zaidao, commander of the Red 4th Army, commented that he was a "blacksmith" who could fight, so everyone began to call him "General Zhou Tie". Zhou Zhijian's military talent stemmed from many years of combat experience, starting from becoming a soldier at the age of 14, he participated in anti-"encirclement and suppression", grass crossing, death squads and other tasks, becoming a fierce general in the Red Army.
In 1941, Zhou Zhijian served as the commander of the 13th Brigade of the 5th Division of the New Fourth Army and made outstanding combat achievements in the Dabie Mountain area. As soon as the enemy heard Zhou Zhijian's name, they were all afraid.
Zhou Zhijian and Nie Fengzhi clashed during the Battle of Jinan. Although Zhou Zhijian was initially only a division commander in reserve, he used his insight and leadership to inspire troops, give different orders, and deter enemy forces. After the Battle of Jinan, the 13th Column commanded by Zhou Zhijian and the 9th Column under Nie Fengzhi attacked Jinan City almost simultaneously.
However, after this victory, due to a misunderstanding of the commendation order, the 109th Regiment was called the "Second Jinan Regiment". The officers and men were not satisfied and were ready to file a lawsuit with Xu Shiyou, but Tian Shixing, commander of the 109th Regiment, was still unconvinced.
With the beginning of the Huaihai Campaign, Su Yu once again summoned Zhou Zhijian's abilities. Zhou Zhijian and his 13th Column, from pursuit, blockade to the final battle, inflicted huge losses on the enemy, fully demonstrating Zhou Zhijian's tactical level and leadership talent.
After the founding of New China, Zhou Zhijian was promoted to lieutenant general. It is said that he had 50 bullet marks on his body, which were wounds from his fighting. These bullet marks witnessed his feat of almost passing by the Grim Reaper, and also made his rank of lieutenant general even more dazzling.
Zhou Zhijian, the hero who rose to prominence in the war, set an example for us. His tactical ability, leadership charisma and bravery are all examples for us to learn from. His story will surely inspire us to keep going.
