In the afternoon of the same day, a serious collapse occurred in the gymnasium of the No. 34 Middle School in Qiqihar City, resulting in the unfortunate death of 11 people, including 10 female volleyball players and 1 coach. It is understood that the cause of the accident was a large amount of perlite piled on the roof of the gymnasium. Perlite is a lightweight insulation material commonly used in building construction. There is a school complex under construction next to the gymnasium, which the construction unit stacked on the roof of the gymnasium in order to facilitate the use of perlite. Due to the recent rainy city of Qiqihar, perlite has absorbed a lot of water and increased its weight a lot. The roof of the gymnasium is made of concrete slabs with limited load-bearing capacity. After the accident, the local government and relevant departments immediately activated the emergency plan, organized 159 rescuers and 4 search and rescue dogs to rush to the scene for rescue and rescue. During the rescue process, four female volleyball players escaped from the gymnasium on their own and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Four other female volleyball players were rescued and sent to the hospital, but their injuries were serious. The female volleyball players are all students from Qiqihar No. 34 Middle School, aged between 14 and 16. If the construction unit and regulatory authorities can strictly abide by the safety regulations, if the stadium can be inspected and repaired in time, if perlite can be properly stored and used, if the accident can be evacuated and rescued in time, then these young lives may not be lost.
