In 1970, he was transferred to Beijing as deputy chief of the general staff and commander of the Beijing Garrison, but his political status began to decline after a dispute with Jiang Qing. Lin Biao decided that he was not well suited to Beijing's political environment, so he transferred him back to the Chengdu Military Region as deputy commander. Although it meant relegation, it ultimately saved his life.

After the 1971 September 13 incident, Wen Yucheng was incommunicado and censored, but his political mistakes were relatively minor, and he was finally rehabilitated in 1976. Although his political career was tortuous, he achieved brilliant military achievements.

In 1989, Wen Yucheng died of illness at the age of 74, ending his legendary life.
