Yan Huiqing's former residence is located in the garden above Lane 1285, Huaihai Middle Road, covering an area of 26,634 square meters and a construction area of 13,674 square meters. Originally a private garden for British Jews with sofas, it was purchased by Zhejiang Industrial Bank in 1933 and designed by Ma Haihang, and by 1941 a total of 74 three-storey brick and wood garden houses had been built, still known as sofa gardens. The building complex is a determinant layout, with free-standing, two-family joint, multi-family joint and other unit types, both simple decoration of modern style, as well as gentle slope tile Spanish style.

Gates, window sills, balconies, and railings are all made of cast iron, and the interiors are spacious and bright, with hardwood waxed floors, a variety of living facilities, and lawns, fountains and cottages in the garden. Zhang Yuanji, chairman of the Commercial Press, lived at No. 24 from 1939 to 1959; Pan Xulun, known as the "Father of Modern Accounting in China," lived at No. 16. In the 1950s, the sofa garden was renamed the upper garden, which has the meaning of quiet and beautiful, and was inscribed by Zhang Yuanji. On June 1, 1992, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government announced it as a cultural relics protection unit in Shanghai. On February 15, 1994, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government announced it as an excellent historical building in the city.

Character stories

The savior of war

On July 7, 1937, the Lugou Bridge Incident broke out. Forced by the grim situation, Yan Huiqing decided to move her family south. The day after they arrived in Shanghai by train, the "August 13" Songhu War of Resistance broke out. This was the first time in Yan Huiqing's life that he personally experienced the war that took place around him. During the three-month-long Songhu War of Resistance, a large number of Chinese people were refugees and displaced under the fire of the Japanese army. At this time, the Shanghai concession became a refuge for the Chinese people. According to the Shanghai "Declaration" and other media records, the total number of refugees gathered in Shanghai at that time was no less than 1.3 million, and the maximum number of refugees who fled into the concession exceeded 700,000 (the total population of the concession at that time was only more than 1.4 million).

A large number of refugees are left unaccompanied, short of food and clothing, and have to sleep on the streets. The concession authorities did nothing regardless of the lives of the refugees. With Chinese charities overwhelmed and winter approaching, it has become imperative to address the refugees' food, shelter and medical needs. Therefore, under the charter of the Red Cross Society of China, the Shanghai International Committee of the Red Cross Society of China was officially established on October 2, with an office at the International Hotel on Jing'an Temple Road (now Nanjing West Road), with Yan Huiqing as honorary chairman and chairman of the executive committee. At that time, thousands of service workers were involved in the rescue of the wounded and refugees without paying a penny. However, both of these tasks themselves require significant funding.

Yan Huiqing and a colleague went to visit the minister of finance of the nationalist government at that time and suggested that the government set an example by allocating the first fund to make the next step of private fundraising smoothly. Finally, he won a grant of 1 million yuan from the government's newly issued treasury bonds. Subsequent fundraising efforts were carried out with great fanfare not only at home but also overseas. According to statistics, the International Commission raised a total of $35 million, enough to sustain about 40,000 wounded and 200,000 refugees for 12 months. Nanshi Refugee Zone is a specific area dedicated to the reception and resettlement of Chinese refugees in the late Songhu War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in The Late 813 Songhu War, initiated by the Shanghai International Committee of the Red Cross Society of China.

This model of setting up non-war zones in war to house war refugees not only became a rescue example that was repeatedly cited and copied during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in the future, but also promoted the enactment of international humanitarian law to a certain extent. Throughout his life, although Mr. Yan Huiqing was known as a diplomat, he was also an outstanding English educator, industrialist, and a great philanthropist.
