The railway in Bago town was flooded and passengers were transported by bus to Yangon railway station
Due to flooding on the Bago Railway, passengers of two high-speed passenger trains departing from Mandalay and Mawlamyine were transported by coach to Yangon Station.
The Ministry of Transport of Myanmar announced that on October 8, 2023, due to flooding in Bago Township in Bago Province, Myanmar, two high-speed passenger trains departing from Mandalay and Mawlamyine to Yangon could not continue to travel, and passengers were transported by bus to Yangon Railway Station.
According to the press release, since the morning of October 8, flash floods have been rushing down the mountain at a rapid rate due to heavy rainfall in Bago province.
The excess overflow of water from the Sandu Dam and the Geddu Rolling Dam caused the flooding of 152 meters of track between milestones [50-3] and [50-7] between Bago Railway Station and Rai Ray Railway Station in Bago Town district, with a flood level of 45.72 cm.
The train could not pass, therefore, 2 high-speed passenger trains have been temporarily stopped.
As a result of this incident, four [outbound] high-speed passenger trains from Mandalay stopped at Bingbangi railway station at 8:00 a.m.
On the Bago-Mawlamyine section, 82 high-speed passenger trains departing from Mawlamyine arrived at Wau railway station at 2:30 p.m., waiting for the water to recede.
As the railway was due to be flooded for a long time, officials from the Myanmar Railways Department provided lunch boxes to about 300 passengers on the four [outbound] high-speed passenger trains that stopped at Bingbangi railway station, and arranged drinking and washing water for the passengers.
Subsequently, under the planning and supervision of the Bago provincial government, at 2 p.m., 225 passengers from the train to Yangon took five buses arranged by the government from Bingbangi Railway Station to Yangon Railway Station.
In addition, after the railway department towed 82 high-speed passenger trains to Cali railway station, the relevant departments dispatched 10 buses to transport 570 train passengers to Yangon railway station.
As the tracks were flooded and trains were impassable, the Myanmar Railways Department cancelled four outbound and return high-speed passenger trains from Yangon and Mandalay this afternoon.
In addition, Myanmar Railways employees plan to transport part of the 6-foot-by-9-foot stones from the Pondardi railway station to the flooded railway section to strengthen the tracks.
In addition, after the flood water of the waterlogged railway section has subsided, the railway department will overhaul the flooded section, and then update the train itinerary as needed to resume normal operation as soon as possible.
