In 1972, the renovation of the Great Mosque of Sana'a, Yemen, caused a serendipitous discovery when workers removed the roof when they discovered a storage room containing very worn-out texts. However, the workers were not interested in the discovery because the paper had been eaten by rodents and insects, and they simply packed the items into bags and moved them up the minaret stairs. Had it not been for subsequent serendipity, the discovery might never have been known. Fortunately, the president of the Yemeni Antiquities Association, Al-Haji Ismail Akwa, was so interested in the discovery that the paper was not ordinary old documents, but verses from the Qur'an.

So he managed to attract the attention of the international community, and in 1981 invited experts from the Saarland University in Germany, Gerd J. R. Puin began to analyze these texts. Studies by experts have found that these texts date back to the first and second centuries of the Hijri calendar (seventh and eighth centuries AD), the oldest known manuscript of the Qur'an, and are a rewritten version, written on parchment, with no other texts before. The researchers also found that this was not a complete text, but a composition of fragments written at different times, different from the Qur'an as we know it today, and the order of the verses was different. This discovery has aroused great interest among researchers.

Experts believe that these differences and the differences in the order of the verses are very important, because we can speculate about the evolution of the Qur'an through these differences. However, there is also a logical question as to why this early version of the Quran is hidden. One explanation is that the current version of the Qur'an's Caliph Uthman ordered the confiscation and burning of all other versions so that there would be no disagreement when reading and interpreting the scriptures. Thus, he united all Muslims and ended the controversy over various parts of the Quran.

However, judging by the fragments found, it is clear that not all versions were completely destroyed, but that someone managed to hide them on the roof of the Great Mosque of Sana'a, and now we have the opportunity to study these fragments and revisit one of the oldest versions of the Quran.
