Located about 60 kilometers west of Derna, Libya's flood-hit area, the ruins of the ancient city of Cyrene are known for their majestic temples and rich collection of ancient tombs. In 1982, UNESCO designated the ruins of the ancient city of Cyrene as a World Heritage Site, which has occupied an important place since the ancient Hellenistic period. After the flood receded, on the 25th local time, the Libyan government sent a team of archaeological experts to inspect the ancient city and salvage cultural relics, but accidentally found some newly exposed remains.

Libyan archaeologist Ahmed Issa: Because of a major flood, some ruins disappeared, but new ones appeared. The landscape of the site has changed, with large amounts of earth and rubble obscuring some remains and revealing new ones to be assessed and studied.

The flood passage caused cracks in the walls of many ancient buildings in the site, and some boulders slipped due to rain. Because the water cycle around the foundation of the building is disrupted by flooding, some buildings are even at risk of collapse. Experts say a national commission should be established as soon as possible to study emerging archaeological remains and develop a series of restoration plans to restore the ruins of the ancient city of Cyrene. At present, the local government and UNESCO have expressed support for the restoration of the site.
