The heritage of Fort Town is worth tasting
Qing Yongzheng's "Chongming County Record" records that in the forty-fifth year of the Wanli Ming Dynasty (1617), Chongmingzhi County established Shen'an Fort City in order to defend against the invasion of the Wokou and pirates. By the time of the Kangxi Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty, nine fort cities were built in the county. Due to the increasing number of residents and frequent commerce, a market town was formed. The market town was first formed in the north of the Chase River, commonly known as the Chase River Town. After the fort city was formed near the Tubao in the south of the Chase River, the fort town was formed. Later, it was renamed North Fort Town and South Fort Town respectively. Since modern times, Nanbao Town has had a ferry port and has become the center of gravity of the market town.
After more than 300 years of ups and downs, the town has accumulated rich historical and cultural relics, and now has a total of 23 immovable cultural relics protection sites. Today, we can still taste her profound heritage from old streets, ancient houses, and factory buildings.
Baozhen Guangming Street Historical and Cultural Landscape Area is one of the suburban historical and cultural areas of Shanghai approved by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in 2005. The style area is composed of residential neighborhood buildings mainly based on the traditional local style of the late Qing and early Min Dynasties, which are distributed on both sides of the two traditional streets and alleys of Main Street and Guangming Street, and is the largest historical and cultural style area on Chongming Island with the largest number of preserved historical buildings. There are 11 historical buildings preserved in the style area, 5 ancient houses more than 100 years old, including 2 buildings more than 200 years old.

Xu Zhangrong's mansion, located at No. 73 Guangming Street, was built in the Qing Dynasty, and the brick carved door wall of the old house still retains the four characters "Wanfu Qizhen" written by Zhang Jian, the champion of the Qing Dynasty, in the 32nd year of Guangxu; Built in the Qing Dynasty, Chen Pingce's wife Gao's Zhenjie Archway, located at No. 148 Main Street, although the plaque and the words on the inscription have been blurred by the wind and frost, but the carved Erlong play pearl and lion rolling hydrangea patterns still tell the story of the unswerving loyalty of the past, singing and crying; Du Shaoru's former residence is located at No. 122 Main Street, with red brick exterior walls, four-walled eaves tile roof, fancy wooden doors and windows, imitation Western-style architecture grandeur and atmosphere, now it has become an immovable cultural relics exhibition hall, the former residence of this patriotic industrialist, but also in a new way to continue and inherit Chongming culture. In the style area, there are also many ancient houses such as Gu's Mansion and Shen's Mansion built in the Qing Dynasty, presenting us with the charm of a century-old town.
Located north of the South Hengyin River, Beibao Town is the place where the market town was formed earlier in the Bao Town area, more than a hundred years ago, Jiefang Street located in Beibao Town, lively and prosperous far beyond Nanbao Town, also known as "North Fort Street". No. 182 Jiefang Street is located the earliest existing residence in Chongming - Shen's House. The residence was built in the middle of the Qing Dynasty and now has brick carved door walls and halls. The four characters "Kentang Ken Construction" are engraved on the brick carved door wall, and the title "Zhang Fufeng Ti Qianlong Ding Haiyang Yue" was written in 1767, more than 250 years ago. Today, although the old street is no longer prosperous, there are still several old houses such as Shen's old residence and Du Mian Zhou house, quietly telling the story of the old town's time.
A hundred years ago, the town of Bao was full of people, merchants gathered, and flowers, yarn and cloth industries were particularly prosperous. Du Shaoru, a national capitalist in Chongming, founded Datong and Fu'an spinning mills in 1919 and 1932 respectively, becoming the earliest and largest enterprise in Chongming's local industry. In 1966, after the mill was transformed into the state-owned Shanghai No. 35 Cotton Spinning Factory, it was also in the limelight, and most of the town was the property of the factory. Today, the former Datong Mill office building and other buildings in the factory area have become immovable cultural relics, and the Shangcotton factory building and office building have also been recognized as the first batch of Shanghai industrial heritage. In the future, it may also be planned to be developed as a cultural and creative base, when the old buildings will return in another form.

In the great waves of history, Ni Baosheng's former residence was successively used for military garrison and granary, and now the old residence has been renovated, allowing future generations to find the century-old history of Chongming through bricks and beams.

In Siyu Village, Bao Town, there is an ancient ginkgo tree over 460 years old, which is said to have been planted in the second year of the Wanli Dynasty in the Ming Dynasty, originally two ginkgo "husband and wife trees", and a lightning bolt in 1985 ended the life of the female ginkgo. In the last century, these two tall ginkgo trees stationed in the lively port of Siyi, serving as beacons for cargo ships, pointing the way to the crew and leaving many moving stories; At No. 230 Jiefang Street, Beibao Town, there is also a ginkgo tree in the flower bed of Jinmin No. 1 Middle School, which is about 200 years old and has been listed as an ancient and famous tree in Shanghai; In the south factory area of Shangmian 35th Factory, there is a camphor tree that is more than 150 years old, two white magnolias that are nearly 100 years old, as well as ancient trees such as magnolia and Luo Han pine that are similar or longer in age.
