SANTIAGO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- "I am well aware that China's restoration of its legitimate seat in the United Nations will receive a large number of votes. It was a historic meeting! Former Chilean President Lagos recently told Xinhua news agency reporters at his office in Santiago, chile' capital.
In the office hall, which is decorated with Qinling bronze carriage and horse handicrafts and double-sided embroidery of the Great Wall, Lagos recalls his experience in New York to attend the 26th Session of the United Nations General Assembly 50 years ago, and the situation before and after China restored its legitimate seat in the United Nations. At the age of 83, he is in good spirits and talks.

Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with New China and was one of the first countries to publicly support the Restoration of the People's Republic of China's legitimate seat in the United Nations.
Lagos said that just two months after the inauguration of Chilean President Allende, he launched a dialogue with New China and decided to establish diplomatic relations with New China.
In December 1970, Chile established diplomatic relations with New China. In 1971, at the invitation of Allende, Lagos joined the Chilean delegation as an economic expert for the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. China's restoration of its legitimate seat in the United Nations was one of the most important issues in the UN General Assembly that year.
Lagos still remembers that in order to prevent China from regaining its legitimate seat in the United Nations, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations lobbied other delegations around the corridors of the United Nations headquarters, "only to see the tide go."
On the evening of 25 October, the 26th session of the UnIPO adopted Resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, restoring the legitimate seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations. One of the 76 votes in favor came from Chile.

Lagos said that before the vote in the General Assembly, he had a dialogue with Almeida, then Chilean foreign minister and head of the Chilean delegation, and U Thant, then Secretary-General of the United Nations. Speaking about how China's restoration of its legitimate seat will bring about changes to the United Nations, U Dan said China's accession would bring an "autonomous voice" to other powers, meaning the United Nations would become more important because it "will better represent the real world."
For 50 years, U Thant's words have been engraved in Lagos's heart. Lagos believes that China's restoration of its legitimate seat in the United Nations has given the United Nations a greater international character and strengthened the role of the United Nations as a truly international institution to solve international problems.
Lagos said that in recent decades, China's economy has taken off, China has continued to grow and develop, play a very important role in the international arena, and assume very important responsibilities.
After stepping down as President of Chile, Lagos served as the United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change. He said that in 2015, China made important contributions to the outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference, and China made great commitments and efforts to cope with climate change.
