On July 31, 2023, a South Korean research team published a paper in arXiv announcing the discovery of the atmospheric pressure room temperature superconductor LK-99, which set off a wave of global public opinion. If room temperature superconductivity is achieved, what impact will it have on our lives? Is LK-99 a true room-temperature superconducting material? On August 10, Yuan Lanfeng, deputy director of the Science Communication Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ji Yang, researcher of the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wu Baojun, executive deputy secretary-general of the Association for Science and Technology of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a live broadcast at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to discuss these issues of public concern.
After the Korean research team announced the discovery of the atmospheric pressure room temperature superconductor LK-99, many domestic research teams conducted reproduction experiments, and the reproduction results were shocking.

Yuan Lanfeng: "In July, South Korean scientists came up with (LK-99) that is even more exaggerated, it is room temperature and atmospheric pressure superconductivity. So what is the current situation of it (LK-99), what is the credibility of this data, and what is the current situation of its reproduction (experimentation)? ”
Ji Yang: "After about a few days, there were domestic units (conducting reproduction experiments), some repeated part of the diamagnetism, some measured the seemingly zero resistance, some said I didn't see anything, didn't see the zero resistance, and I didn't get the diamagnetism." Including the latest, about a day or two ago in our Institute of Physics, teacher Luo Jianlin and his group said that they were in a similar system, and then studied this cuprous sulfide and saw a phenomenon very close to what was reported in South Korea. But they use a different, so to speak, trivial explanation, that there is no room-temperature superconductivity here, just a so-called first-order phase transition, and then the structure of the material changes, so it leads to a change in resistance and so on. Now, what we can be sure of is that Korean scientists had some experimental evidence when they published their article, and the experimental results they observed may not be particularly detailed, may be a bit crude, and the explanation cannot convince everyone. But they should be quite confident in their experiments, after more than 20 years of research. So in the past two weeks or so, I have seen news on the Internet, including their preprint documents, some of which are on video, that there are indeed some groups that have been able to partially reproduce their so-called experimental phenomenon. But, at least for now, it doesn't seem to support that they actually discovered room-temperature superconductivity. ”
