Comprehensive CNN and Associated Press and other media reported that on July 9, local time, former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, who is notorious for sexually assaulting multiple underage athletes, was stabbed by another prisoner while serving his sentence.

People familiar with the matter said that Nassar was stabbed 10 times (some say 6), was rescued by prison guards, has been sent to the hospital, and is currently in stable condition. After the news broke, a victim of Nassar's sexual assault case said that he was not happy about it, opposed violence, and did not want him to die so easily.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed in a statement that at about 2:35 p.m. local time on July 9, a prisoner at Coleman No. 2 Prison in Florida, USA, was attacked, and the staff immediately took first aid measures, and the treatment work was still ongoing.

The statement said an internal investigation into the incident was ongoing. But due to privacy and security concerns, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons did not release the identities of the inmates who were attacked, nor did it release further details about the attack.

CNN quoted two people familiar with the matter as saying that it was Larry Nassar, who sexually assaulted hundreds of young women and committed multiple crimes such as child pornography under the guise of "healing".

Joe Rojas, president of the local prison guards' union, told CNN that Nassar was stabbed a total of 10 times — two in the neck, two in the back and six in the chest. Rojass said prison guards at the scene saved Nassar's life, and Nassar is in stable condition.

ABC, citing sources, said Nassar had been stabbed six times, one of which was a "serious injury" that appeared to be a lung injury, but overall he is in stable condition.

The attack, which was first reported by The Associated Press, said it was another prisoner who stabbed Nassar and that no other staff or prisoners were injured in the incident. People familiar with the matter also said that due to the prison's current "shortage of manpower", two prison guards guarding Nassar's prison unit were required to work overtime.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons has experienced severe staffing shortages in recent years, a problem highlighted in 2019, when Epstein died in prison.

A 2021 survey by the Associated Press revealed that nearly one-third of federal prison officer positions in the United States are vacant, forcing prisons to use cooks, teachers, nurses and other staff to guard prisoners. Staffing shortages have affected the prison's response to emergencies.

After the news of Nassar's attack, some victims of his sexual assault said they were not happy about it.

Sarah Klein, the victim, said the news of the attack reminded her and others of the trauma of Nassar's evil deeds and of the fact that U.S. law enforcement agencies "protected" him and gave him the opportunity to continue his evil. "I hope he faces a harsh prison sentence because of the survivors' voices." I am in no way for violence because it is morally wrong, and death is an easy way out for Nassar. ”

As the perpetrator of the largest sexual assault in American sports, Nassar has long worked at Michigan State University and the American Gymnastics Association, and was a team doctor for the U.S. women's gymnastics team at four Olympic Games.

Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison in 2017 for possession of 37,000 child pornography videos and images; in 2018 he was sentenced to 40-175 years in Michigan State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to seven sexual assault charges, including sexual assault of minors; and was subsequently sentenced to 40-125 years in state prison for pleading guilty to three other sexual assault charges.

Nassar's state prison sentence and federal prison sentence will be served consecutively, ensuring de facto life imprisonment, and the criminal, born in 1963, will spend the rest of his life within the walls.

According to US media reports, at the sentencing hearing of the relevant verdict in 2018, 156 victims testified (either in person or by commission), many of whom were minors when they were violated, and Nassar violated them under the guise of "medical treatment". The victims also complained that they had reported the incident to coaches and others, including adult athletes, but the incident was not reported, and the FBI did not stop Mr. Nassar from continuing to reach out when it discovered the allegations in 2015.

More than 300 victims had claimed compensation from Michigan State University, which agreed to pay $500 million in 2018; In addition, more than 500 women victims, including Olympic gold medalist Biles, sought more than $1 billion in compensation from the federal government, and in 2021, victims reached a $380 million settlement with the American Gymnastics Federation, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committees and their insurers.
