According to Sport Bild's Christian Falk confirmed on social media, Arsenal star Granit Xhaka is undergoing a medical examination by Bayer Leverkusen and is close to returning to the Bundesliga in this summer's transfer window.
The 30-year-old Switzerland international was one of the main drivers of the Gunners' Premier League title race last season.
However, his untimely recklessness against Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield almost cost Mikel Arteta's side momentum and ended up runners-up.
Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016 and has since made 297 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 23 goals and assisting 29.
Despite some stellar performances in north London, the veteran never really established himself as a consistently outstanding player.
Given the agreement with Bayer Leverkusen in May, it has been some time since he left the north London giants.
With Declan Rice close to becoming part of the Gunners, Xhaka is also poised to start a new chapter in his career.
Bayer Leverkusen will pay €25 million for the 30-year-old to help the London side recoup a hefty sum of money as Xhaka is no longer young.
Xhaka will sign with the German club until 2028 and is expected to see success at the new club under the leadership of young manager Alonso.
Bayer Leverkusen are rising under Alonso, but they still lack the strength to compete for the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
While Xhaka alone cannot change the situation at Bayer Leverkusen, he will provide a reliable midfield presence and add more solidity to a promising team.
As a defensive midfielder, the veteran is mainly known for losing his cool easily on the pitch.
Hopefully, age has made him more mature and he will be able to prove himself with his football on the Bundesliga giants.
