Metacritic kicks off with a glimpse of the highest-rated games of 2023 so far.

Games released between January 1 and June 30, 2023 will be ranked according to their metascore "before rounding" and must receive "at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible for inclusion".

The full list of the top 20 is as follows, with all scores being scored out of 100:

Destructoid found that 7 of these entrants scored the highest marks on PS5 and Switch, 5 on PC, and only 1 on Xbox Series x, Hi-Fi Rush. However, this is because "if a game is released on multiple platforms, [Metacritic] will only include the version that gets the most reviews".

Similarly, "multi-game builds and new releases released on other platforms in recent years are also excluded unless they are significantly different from previous releases," Metacritic said, citing the example of an HD remake that "also adds some new content or adds multiple generations of hardware to previous releases." Expansion packs and DLC are also excluded.

Metacritic's Fandom, aware of "abusive and disrespectful comments on Horizon," took steps to "improve [its] processes and tools and introduce stricter scrutiny."

Burning Shores, the DLC for Horizon: Forbidden West, was released in April of this year. While many praised its visuals and smooth gameplay, one of the plot points led to the game being bombarded on Metacritic, dropping DLC's user rating to 2.7. The index currently stands at 4.3.
