Gao Shi (1032-1093), named Gao Taotao, was a native of Mengcheng, Bozhou (present-day Mengcheng County, Anhui Province), whose great-grandfather was Gao Qiong, the founding general of the Northern Song Dynasty, and his maternal great-grandfather was the Northern Song general Cao Bin. Empress Dowager Cao of the Northern Song Dynasty and Empress Dowager Renzong of song was her sister-in-law. Emperor Renzong of Song and Empress Cao had no descendants, and Empress Cao raised them in the imperial palace from an early age.
Emperor Yingzong of Song was a great-grandson of Emperor Taizong of Song and a nephew of Emperor Renzong of Song. Emperor Renzong of Song had been childless, and fearing that he would never die, he chose to raise his sons in the palace and was prepared. Zhao Yunrang, the king of Pu'an Yi, had many sons, and Emperor Renzong of Song sent his fourteen-year-old thirteenth son, Zong Shi (later renamed Zhao Shu), who was only four years old, into the palace to raise him.
Zhao Shu was lively and clever, and was very popular with Song Renzong. Empress Cao and Miao Meiren took good care of him. Although life in the palace was very prosperous, Zhao Shu still missed his biological parents and often clamored to go home. Later, When Emperor Renzong of Song had a son of his own, he sent Zhao Shu back.
Unexpectedly, several sons of Song Renzong died one after another, and Zhao Shu returned to Song Renzong's side. He was not only promoted to knighthood, but often received various rewards. At the suggestion of Sima Guang and other ministers, Emperor Ren of Song made Zhao Shu crown prince.

The two of them have lived together in the palace since they were young, and are a pair of green plum bamboo horses of similar age. At that time, the people in the palace called Gao Shi "Empress Daughter" and Zhao Shu "Guanjia'er" (Guanjia was another name for the emperor of the Song Dynasty). As they grew older, the affection between the two increased.
One day, Song Renzong said to Empress Cao: We have no children, and it is not a happy thing for you and me to act as a matchmaker to let them marry? Empress Cao actually had such a plan in mind, so she immediately nodded her head and said yes. In the seventh year of the Qing calendar (1047), Gao and Zhao Shu became two couples. At that time, the palace called "the son of heaven marries a woman, the queen marries a daughter", and the government and the public have been rumored to be beautiful talks for a while. They lived together for fifteen years until Zhao Shu died of illness.
How good is the relationship between the two?
In the "History of Song", "Long Edition", "Continued Zizhi Tongjian" and even other Song Dynasty notes, there is no record of Song Yingzong Zhao Shu jin concubines. In Cai Jing's son Cai Qi's "Discussion on the Iron Walled Mountains", it was mentioned that Song Yingzong did not have any attendants left and right. This statement bluntly shows that Zhao Shu practices monogamy.
It is said that later Zhao Shu's health improved, but Gao still did not allow him to visit other palace people, and Empress Cao felt that it was inappropriate, so she asked her cronies to quietly persuade Gao to "implement an open policy". Gao Shi was very unhappy to hear this, and summoned someone to send a message to Empress Cao: I am married to Thirteen Lang, not to his official family.
In Gao's eyes, Zhao Shu was only his beloved husband, not the emperor. Living together for more than ten years, the two gave birth to four sons and four daughters, which created a miracle among the many emperors of the Song Dynasty who had a generally poor birth, and also showed from the side that their husband and wife life was harmonious and happy.
Zhao Shu's personality is a bit indecisive, and some people may think that he is not strong, saying that the blunt point is "fearing the inside", and to put it more bluntly is "rake the ear", but it cannot be said that this is caused by Song Yingzong's deep affection for Gao. As a heavenly son of nine and five, how could he not dare to touch other women because he was afraid of the queen?
Emperor Wen of Sui's lone empress counted as the first "humble wife" of the Tianzi, right? On the wedding night, the husband will make a promise that he can only have a doll with her. After the laying of the Jiangshan, he usually insisted on being with his husband, but Yang Jian still had a record of taking advantage of loopholes to steal. Regardless of the history of the wild, Zhao Shu did not have any anecdotes in this regard.

Emperor Yingzong of Song died of illness after four years of reign. Zhao Yan succeeded to the throne for Emperor Shenzong of Song, who died of illness after eight years of reign, and was succeeded by Zhao Xu of Song Zhezong. Due to the young age of Emperor Zhezong of Song, Gao Shi took over the government as empress dowager. Although Gao did not have any outstanding achievements during his reign, he set a good example for future generations.
In the Song Dynasty, there were many empresses who bowed to the government, and none of them were like Lü Hou of the Han Dynasty and Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, and the foreign relatives even went to the point of usurping the throne of the dynasty, and the Gao clan took the lead in ensuring the stability of the Zhao dynasty and also ensuring the clean name of their own family.
Gao Shilin's younger brother Gao Shilin had been serving as an inner temple for a long time, and the then emperor Song Yingzong told Gao that he intended to elevate Shilin to an official. Gao Shi said: Shilin can become an official in the dynasty, it is already excessive grace, how can there be more ideas?
After Emperor Shenzong of Song succeeded to the throne, he took the initiative several times to build a luxurious mansion for the Gao family, but the Gao clan resolutely refused to agree. In the end, the imperial court rewarded a vacant land, which was repaired at the expense of the Gao family itself, without spending a penny from the national treasury.
Once, Gao's nephew Gao Gonghua presented a sonata asking the imperial court to honor Princess Zhu, the biological mother of Emperor Zhezong of Song, and the Gao family, who was familiar with official and political affairs, judged that this was not written by Gao Gonghui himself, and someone instigated it behind his back. So he summoned Gao Gongye to inquire. Gao Gongye couldn't hide it, so he had to confess that it was the idea of a person called Forgiving and wrote it on his behalf. Not only did Gao not allow it, but he also expelled the criminal and degraded officials from the imperial court.
She was honest and honest, handled things fairly, and during her period of listening to the government, the government was relatively clear, and she was praised by the government and the public as a female middle Yao Shun.
In the autumn of the eighth year of Yuan Hu (1093), Gao died of illness in Beijing at the age of sixty-one, with the posthumous title of Empress Xuanren Shenglie. What she got was a good ending.
