Liu Dai of the Eighteenth Road Princes of Dong

Liu Dai (?) –192), courtesy name Gongshan, a native of Donglai Muping (東莱牟平; northwest of present-day Fushan, Shandong), a relative of the Han Dynasty, the son of Liu You, the brother of Liu Xuan, and one of the heroes of the late Han Dynasty.

Liu Dai's uncle Liu Pet served as a lieutenant in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and Liu Dai himself served as a servant in the Han Dynasty and in Yanzhou.

In the first month of 190 AD (the first year of the First Year of Chuping), the masses of people in various places rose up and played the banner of currying favor with Dong. At that time, Yuan Shao and Wang Kuangtun were in Hanoi, and Zhang Yang also led thousands of people to surrender; Zhang Miao, Liu Dai, Qiao Mao, Yuan Yi and Bao Xintun soldiers sour jujube, and Cao Cao belonged to Zhang Miao's army; Yuan Shutun soldiers Luyang, Sun Jian rushed from Changsha to meet Yuan Shu; Kong Lingtun soldiers Yingchuan; and Han Fu stayed in Yicheng to give food to the coalition forces. All the heroes elected Yuan Shao as their ally. Later, Liu Dai and Dongjun Taishouqiao were at odds, and eventually Liu Dai killed Qiao Mao and replaced Wang Fei with Dongjun Taishou.

Liu Dai was also close to Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zhan, and Yuan Shao let his family members live in Liu Dai's residence, and Gongsun Zhan also sent his subordinate Fan Fang to lead an army to assist Liu Dai. After that, Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zhan had a conflict, and after Gongsun Zhan broke yuan shao's army, he asked Liu Dai to cut off contact with Yuan Shao, and then said to Fan Fang: "If Liu Dai does not drive away Yuan Shao's family members, you will lead the army back." When I destroy Yuan Shao, I will attack Liu Dai. Liu Dai could not make up his mind for days, and his other driver, Wang Yu, told Liu Dai that it was better to ask Cheng Yu. So Liu Dai summoned Cheng Yu and asked him for a strategy, Cheng Yu persuaded Liu Dai to help Yuan Shao, Liu Dai obeyed his plan, and sure enough, Gongsun Zhan was defeated by Yuan Shao soon after.

In the third year of Chuping (192), the Yellow Turban Army of Qingzhou attacked Yanzhou, and Liu Dai, the assassin of Yanzhou, planned to send troops to meet it, but Bao Xin dissuaded him: "At present, there are millions of thieves, the people are afraid and shocked, the soldiers have no fighting spirit, they are irresistible, I see that the thieves and soldiers are mixed, and they follow each other before and after, and there is no heavy grain and grass in the thief army, but they only make a living by plundering." Now the countermeasures are better than letting the troops recuperate their strength and take the initiative first, the thieves want to fight, want to attack but can't, wait for their momentum to fall, and then select elite soldiers, they can defeat them. Liu Dai did not take Bao Xin's advice and insisted on going to war, and as a result, the soldiers were defeated and killed.
