Quiet Desert by Karim Amr
This series by photographer Karim Amr captures the ethereal atmosphere over the pyramids and deserts of Egypt. Trying to develop a unique language in his images, separate from the more typical travel photographs, Karim instilled in his work a spirit that highlighted the vast, empty solitude of the landscape.
Picking out a lonely figure, a tree, or the moon overhead, each frame reminds the viewer of the solitary tranquility of the desert. The three pyramids of Giza emerge from the hazy horizon, stacked in space behind a small group of travelers in the distant foreground. The unique representation of these pyramids lays the foundation for their monumental and ancient and mysterious existence.

Abstract photography in Egypt
Through his photography, Karim Amr transforms Egypt's desert landscape into atmospheric abstraction. Endless sand dunes may fill the entire frame, becoming a series of flat layers expressing windswept sand. In some images, the horizon is delineated by sharp graphic color blocks. In other cases, it fades lightly in the form of a hazy gradient of pastel tones.
The presentation of this photo series is timely, as it coincides with the opening of this week's exhibition, an encounter with the Little Prince of Paris (see more here). The exhibition presents the original pages and paintings of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, whose work and life were largely influenced by the time he spent in the African desert. "It's the loveliest and saddest scenery in the world," he noted. The landscape representation of Karim Amr is very similar to the sketches of Saint-Exupéry, with minimal lines and empty space.
