Regarding the sketching of Chinese painting, Chen Nianfa said that Dong Qichang, a great painter of the Ming Dynasty, said that "with the strange theory of the environment, the painting is not as good as the landscape; with the theory of the subtlety of pen and ink, the landscape is by no means as good as the picture." Landscape sketching expresses space, height, distance, size, sparseness, etc., and the scattered perspective of the mountain shape step by step creates the space that constitutes the picture.
He said that sketching is actually a keen sense of nature, boldly discovering the transition from a new landscape to a state of mind, the deep exchange and collision of subjective spirit and natural life, respecting the perception of nature and the objective world, and finding the possibility of landscape writing mountain pen and ink performance from it, from which the scene can be blended to make the picture vividly reproduced.
For this exhibition, he said that this sketch is the work of traveling to different places in the past two or three years, including Shanxi, Anhui, Guangxi, Shaanxi and Guangdong. The unity of mind, hand and eye when sketching is also something I often emphasize when I sketch, and these works are written in a comfortable situation. For Chinese painting sketching, I feel that I have been exploring, always on the road of sketching.
