Recently, Academician Darwin Caldwell, Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the IEEE, Founding Dean of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Head of the Department of Advanced Robotics of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Honorary Professor of the University of Manchester, Honorary Professor of King's College London, Honorary Professor of the University of Sheffield, and Honorary Professor of Bangor University, joined the Asia-Pacific Society for Artificial Intelligence (hereinafter referred to as AAIA).

Career

Darwin G. Caldwell received his B.Sc and PhD in Robotics from the University of Hull in 1986 and 1990, respectively, and a M.Sc degree in Management from the University of Salford in 1994. He is currently the founding director of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the head of the Department of Advanced Robotics. Fellow Caldwell was an honorary professor at the University of Manchester, the University of Sheffield, King's College, Bangor University in the UK and Tianjin University in China.

Major contribution

Darwin G. Caldwell's research interests include; Humanoid and quadruped robots (iCub, cCub, COMAN, WalkMan, HyQ, HyQ2Max, HalfMan, COMAN+), innovative actuators, tactile and strength augmentation exoskeletons, medical, rehabilitation and assistive robotics, dexterous manipulators.

He is the author or co-author of more than 500 academic papers, 20+ patents, and has received awards and nominations in many international journals and conferences. Fellow Caldwell has served as Chair of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Subcommittee (UKRI), Co-Chair of the IEE PN on Robotics and Mechatronics, Secretary of Mechatronics at IEEE/ASME Trans., and on the Editorial/Editorial Board of several leading journals. In 2015, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
