On the evening of May 29, the WeChat Security Center issued the "Governance Announcement on the Publication of Contraband Marketing Information by WeChat Personal Accounts", which reads as follows:
WeChat has been committed to creating a safe, healthy and green platform ecosystem. Recently, the WeChat team has strengthened the governance of WeChat personal accounts publishing contraband information, including but not limited to the illegal use of the Internet to publish marketing information on specific commodities (such as tobacco, e-cigarettes, etc.) or the use of the Internet to publish contraband marketing information (such as aphrodisiac, illegal health products, etc.). Such violations of laws and regulations seriously affect the normal user experience, and are very easy to lead to malicious behaviors such as fraud.
In order to standardize the information release behavior of WeChat personal accounts and protect the legitimate rights and interests of WeChat users, if WeChat personal accounts publish, display or disseminate all kinds of "contraband" marketing information in any form, the WeChat team will take stepwise treatment according to the severity of the violation in accordance with the requirements of relevant national laws and regulations, as well as the provisions of the Tencent WeChat Software License and Service Agreement and the WeChat Personal Account Use Specifications:
- Accounts for initial or general violations will be subject to a warning or feature penalty.
- Accounts with multiple or serious violations will be subject to overall account restrictions.
Since January 2023, after verifying the evidence of user complaints, a total of 7,236 WeChat accounts and 1,871 WeChat group chats have been punished with stepped punishments such as restricting the use of functions or restricting login.

WeChat Security Center reminder
Citizens selling illegal and contraband on the Internet violate relevant laws and regulations such as the Criminal Law and the Public Security Administration Punishment Law. It is also illegal for users to publish illegal and contraband marketing information through product functions such as personal accounts, groups, and moments of friends; Helping friends to forward publicity and promote illegal and contraband in Moments and WeChat groups may be punished by both the publisher and the forwarder in accordance with law.
We call on everyone to take the initiative to understand the national laws and regulations on prohibited goods and the sales scope of specific goods when using WeChat, and avoid violating relevant laws, regulations and platform norms. For example, according to the Measures for the Administration of Tobacco Monopoly Licenses, illegal sales of tobacco monopoly products shall not be allowed through information networks; If it fails to meet the requirements of the regulatory authorities, it is not allowed to publish drug or medical device promotion content in violation of regulations.
For the violations of laws and regulations mentioned above, while continuing to carry out platform governance, the WeChat team will also cooperate with relevant departments to carry out joint crackdowns in accordance with the law. At the end of 2022, with the cooperation of the WeChat team in accordance with the law, the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, together with relevant departments, cracked the case of a criminal gang led by Chen selling e-cigarettes online. More than 100 brands of non-national standard electronic cigarettes totaled more than 110,000 were seized in this case, and 9 criminal suspects were arrested.
