In the third year of Hongwu (1370), Zhu Di was made the King of Yan. He once lived in Fengyang and knew a lot about people's feelings. In the thirteenth year of his reign in Beiping (present-day Beijing), he was repeatedly appointed to participate in military activities in the north, and twice led his divisions on the northern expeditions, strengthening his influence in the northern army. In Zhu Yuanzhang's later years, the crown prince Zhu Biao, the Qin king Zhu Zhu, and the Jin king Zhu Tang died one after another, and Zhu Di became the head of the kings not only in terms of military strength, but also in the family order. After Zhu Yuanzhang's death, the succeeding Jianwen Emperor Zhu Yunjiao (朱允炆) carried out a slash of the domain, and Zhu Di launched the Battle of Jingnan in July of the first year of Jianwen (1399), and in June of the fourth year, he invaded Nanjing and seized the throne. The following year it was changed to Yuan Yongle (1403-1424). In the first year of Jianwen (1399), he began to raise troops and called himself "Jingnan". In the fourth year, he broke the Jing Division (present-day Nanjing, Jiangsu), seized the throne, and killed Fang Xiaoru and others.

During his reign, the society was stable and the country was rich and strong, and because of the name of chengzu as "Yongle", later generations called this period "Yongle Prosperous".
