In 2022, the wage level of employed persons in urban units will maintain growth

Wang Pingping, director of the Population and Employment Statistics Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, interpreted the average wage data of employed persons in urban units in 2022:

According to the National Bureau of Statistics survey of 1.381 million enterprises above designated size and 721,000 sample units below designated size, the average salary of employed persons in urban units[1] nationwide will maintain growth in 2022.

First, the wage level maintained growth, and the growth rate declined

In 2022, the average annual wage of urban non-private employees nationwide will be 114029 yuan, an increase of 6.7% over the previous year, a growth rate of 3.0 percentage points lower than that in 2021, and an actual increase of 4.6% after deducting price factors; The average annual wage of employed persons in urban private units was 65,237 yuan, an increase of 3.7% over the previous year, down 5.2 percentage points, and an actual increase of 1.7% after deducting price factors.

Among the 19 industry categories, the average wages of employed persons in 18 industries maintained growth, among which the average wage growth rate of urban non-private units and private units (hereinafter referred to as "two types of units") in mining, information transmission, software and information technology services, and financial industries was relatively high; Average wages in the real estate sector have declined, and average wage growth in some personnel-intensive or contact-based service industries has been low. Affected by factors such as rising international energy prices, the average wages of employees in the mining industry will increase by 12.0% and 9.3% respectively in 2022. Affected by the large demand for Internet learning, work, social networking and online shopping, the average wages of information transmission, software and information technology services increased by 9.4% and 8.1% respectively. The average wage growth rate of both types of units in the financial industry was 15.6%, mainly affected by factors such as industry restructuring, staff reduction and efficiency improvement. Taking the four major categories of urban non-private financial industry as an example, the wages of money and financial services (mainly banks, etc.), capital market services (mainly securities funds and investment companies, etc.) and other financial services industries are relatively high, 216,000 yuan, 452,000 yuan and 423,000 yuan respectively, with average wage growth rates of 6.1%, 2.4% and 6.7% respectively, while the average wage of the insurance industry is lower, only 91,000 yuan, but its growth rate is as high as 19.1%. The main reason for the higher average wage growth in the insurance industry is that insurance agents with lower wages have significantly decreased in 2022, reducing the number of insurance industry employment by nearly 23% and total wages by 8.2%. The decline in the number of people employed in the low-wage insurance industry is the main reason for the large change in the average wage level in the financial sector.

Second, the wage gap between industries and regions is more obvious

In 2022, whether in urban non-private units or private units, the top three industries with the average annual salary level of employed persons are information transmission, software and information technology services with high technology content, financial industry, scientific research and technical service industry. The bottom three industries with wage levels are slightly different, and in urban non-private units, accommodation and catering, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, resident services, repairs and other services; In the private sector, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, water conservancy, environment and public facilities management, as well as accommodation and catering industries. Compared with 2021, the top three and bottom three industries in terms of average salary levels in 2022 remained unchanged. The industry gap between the wage level of urban non-private units reached 4.08, and the industry difference between the wage level of urban private units was 2.91.

In terms of regions, whether in urban non-private units or private units, the wage level is the highest in the east and the lowest in the northeast. From the perspective of urban non-private units, the average annual wages in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions were 133,000 yuan, 90,000 yuan, 101,000 yuan and 90,000 yuan respectively, an increase of 7.1%, 5.8%, 6.1% and 7.6% respectively. Taking the east as 1, the ratio of average wages in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions is 1:0.68:0.76:0.68, and in 2021 it is 1:0.69:0.77:0.67, and the gap between the eastern and northeastern regions has narrowed by 0.01, and the gap with the central and western regions has widened. From the perspective of urban private units, the average annual wages in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions were 73,000 yuan, 53,000 yuan, 56,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan respectively, with growth rates of 4.7%, 1.5%, 2.8% and 3.7% respectively. Taking the east as 1, the ratio of the average wage level in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions is 1:0.73:0.76:0.68, and in 2021, it is 1:0.76:0.78:0.69, and the gap between the eastern region and other regions has widened.

Third, the difference between individual wages and national average wages is affected by many factors and should be viewed rationally

Due to different regions, different industries, and different types of units, there are sometimes large differences in the wage level between units; Within the same unit, there will be certain differences in salary levels depending on the position of the employed person. Current wage statistics use grouped data to reflect the wage levels of different regions, industries, and unit types, as well as the wage levels of people employed in different positions within regions and industries. For example, among the employees of enterprises above designated size, the average annual salary of middle-level and above managers in information transmission, software and information technology services, scientific research and technical service units is 425,000 yuan and 302,000 yuan respectively, while the average annual salary of some employees in water conservancy, environment and public facilities management, accommodation and catering is about 40,000 yuan. Average wage data can give us an idea of the approximate wage level of the corresponding employed person in the labor market. However, due to different unit benefits and different individual specific conditions, even for employees in the same region, the same industry, the same unit type and the same position, there will still be some differences between individual salary levels.

The growth and change of the average wage of employed persons in urban units are also affected by multiple factors, including external factors such as macro policies and the general social and economic environment, as well as internal factors such as unit restructuring and changes in employment structure. For example, the same agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery units, the nature of urban non-private units and private units, the major types of industries engaged in work, and the types of employed personnel are different, all of which will lead to large differences in wage growth. Most of the urban non-private units in the education industry are public schools, while there are more training institutions in the private sector, which will show a big difference in the average wage growth rate due to changes in the economic situation and policy adjustments.

In short, due to various reasons, the specific salary level and growth rate of individuals may be quite different from the national average and growth rate, which requires a comprehensive analysis and rational view from the industry, region, unit type, position, unit operating conditions and personal specific conditions.
