Professor Lin Limin (right) and Mr. Zhang, a citizen, take samples in the pool.

Citizens found more than a dozen transparent small animals in the pool on the roof of their building, and after querying the information from the Internet, they found that these swimming small animals were suspected to be rare peach blossom jellyfish!

Recently, Mr. Zhang, a citizen, called the hotline of this newspaper 968820, hoping that the reporter would help find out whether the creatures in the pool were really peach blossom jellyfish known as "giant pandas in the water". After the reporter learned about the situation on the spot, he invited professionals from the Fisheries College of Jimei University to come to the door to take samples and identify, and the professionals confirmed that it was indeed a rare peach blossom jellyfish.

Small jellyfish appeared in the freshwater pool on the roof

"Yesterday I went upstairs to check the meter, and by the way, I looked at the small shrimp that I put into the pool a few months ago, but I didn't see the shrimp, but I saw more than a dozen jellyfish-like creatures swimming in the water." On the 13th, the reporter met Mr. Zhang in Xiang'an Xindian Town, he told reporters that 3 years ago, he built a 3 square meter pool on the roof of the building, usually buy ornamental fish into the pool, and occasionally put in the small shrimp and snails caught from the stream. "The pool is filled with fresh water pumped from underground wells, and an automatic circulation system is installed to change water at regular intervals."

The reporter arrived at Mr. Zhang's home and did see a number of transparent jellyfish with a diameter of about 0.5 centimeters swimming around in the pool. "I'm more interested in small animals, knowing that jellyfish generally grow in seawater, but the water in my family's pool is fresh water, why do jellyfish appear?" Mr. Zhang hurried to check the Internet and found that it was likely to be a very rare peach blossom jellyfish.

"Xiamen Daily is an authoritative party newspaper, and I hope you can help find professionals to identify whether it is a peach blossom jellyfish." To this end, Mr. Zhang called the newspaper's hotline 968820.

Peach blossom jellyfish inedible maximum will not exceed 1 yuan coin

With doubts, on the 16th, the reporter invited Professor Lin Limin of the Fisheries College of Jimei University to come to Mr. Zhang's home together, sample 3 jellyfish, and return to the college for identification.

"Based on the morphological characteristics of biology and the existing classification morphological description map in hand, we confirmed that the organism in the pool on the roof of Mr. Zhang's house was a peach blossom jellyfish." Professor Lin said that there are 11 kinds of peach blossom jellyfish in the world, and there are 9 species in China, as for which kind of peach blossom jellyfish mr. Zhang's family belongs to, it needs to be further studied.

"The discovery of peach blossom jellyfish in our city this time can be said to be very rare!" Professor Lin told reporters that in the 1980s, peach blossom jellyfish in China has been difficult to find, but in the past 10 years, there have been news of peach blossom jellyfish found in many places in China.

"There are more than 3,000 kinds of jellyfish, the most common of which is the jellyfish we usually eat. This peach blossom jellyfish is inedible, usually between 0.5 cm and 1.0 cm in diameter, and the largest will not exceed the size of a 1 yuan coin. Professor Lin told reporters that in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, peach blossom jellyfish will appear from March to May, in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, it will appear from June to August, and in South China, it will appear from September to October. The peach blossom jellyfish found in Mr. Zhang's family should be the product of autumn breeding.

noun

Peach blossom jellyfish

Peach blossom jellyfish live in clean rivers and lakes, is the only small jellyfish living in fresh water, known as the "giant panda in the water". It has high research value and ornamental value, as a species formed by biological evolution, its status is not inferior to that of giant pandas. In zoology, the world's first recorded peach blossom jellyfish was in 1880, and the specimen was collected in London, England. In 1907, China first collected peach blossom jellyfish in Yichang, Hubei Province.

Explanation

How to get into the pool

Attached to the shell of a snail or pumped up from well water

"After the jellyfish lays eggs, the eggs will become hydra, attached to the edge of the pool or on a rock, and in the next year the hydra will breed into jellyfish, and a water hydra can reproduce up to 8 to 10 jellyfish." As for why the peach blossom jellyfish appeared in the pool, Professor Lin Limin of the School of Fisheries of Jimei University said that there are two possibilities, one is that the hydra body is attached to the shell of the snail caught by Mr. Zhang and is brought into the pool; the other is that the hydra body is pumped up from the underground well water and thus enters the pool.

"Peach blossom jellyfish have high requirements for water quality, and it is recommended that Mr. Zhang often change the water to the pool to increase the survival rate of peach blossom jellyfish." Professor Lin said that the appearance of peach blossom jellyfish would not pose a threat to the existing organisms in Mr. Zhang's pool. (Xiamen Daily article/photo reporter Xue Yao)
