Medicine King Bodhisattva and Medicine Bodhisattva

overview

Medicine King Bodhisattvas and Medicine Bodhisattvas are sometimes seen as Buddha's left and right protectors, taking the place of Manjushri and Puxian Bodhisattvas.

The medicine king and Yao Shangben are brothers, and the brothers' names are Hoshikoko and Electric Light, respectively. Because they provided for the monks and administered medicine to all living beings, they won the admiration of the people, so they were revered as the medicine king and the medicine lord.

Subsequently, the two brothers eventually achieved the state of bodhisattva through the practice of medicine and good deeds.

The Buddha once predicted to Maitreya that these two brothers would become Buddhas in the future, and they would be honored as Pure Eyes and Pure Hidden Beings.

"Buddha Teachings on the Two Bodhisattvas of Medicine King Medicine"

According to the Buddha's Teachings on the Two Bodhisattvas of Medicine King Medicine:

The Bodhisattva of Medicine is twelve feet tall, and he can manifest a figure of eighteen or eight feet according to the needs of all living beings.

His body is purple-gold, with thirty-two good looks and eighty good forms, just like the Buddha.

Above his head were fourteen Manichaean beads, each with fourteen angular corners, and fourteen ornate flowers between each corner.

He wears a majestic heavenly crown with images of the Ten Buddhas and numerous bodhisattvas inside, as magnificent as a temple of treasures. There was a shimmer between his eyebrows, shining with white glazed colors, and there were seven circles of light around his body, like a white treasure tent.

His pores radiated light, like a manichaean bead shining with 84,000 rays.

When each Mani bead turns, it presents a right-handed pagoda pattern, on which there is an incarnated Buddha, six feet tall, like Shakyamuni Buddha.

There are also 500 bodhisattvas around each statue as attendants.

The medicine king Bodhisattva's arms were colored by a hundred treasures, and the end of his fingers dripped with seven treasures rain.

If any sentient being can see the sight of the bodhisattva's finger, he will naturally be free from the four hundred and four diseases, and all his troubles will disappear. His feet descended from the Vajra treasure, and each orb turned into a gimbal, in which countless incarnated bodhisattvas and numerous gods served as attendants.

Hearsay stories

The medicine king Bodhisattva is famous for his brilliant medical skills, and there are almost no diseases that he cannot cure.

At one point, his mother's eyes hurt and despite trying many medications, she didn't see better, which made the brothers anxious.

One day, the medicine king Bodhisattva went out to treat people. During his absence, his younger brother said to his mother, "Mother, my brother can treat all kinds of diseases, and if there is no disease that he cannot cure, why can't he cure your disease?" The mother replied, "It's not your brother's fault, he did his best, but I want you to carry me to the back mountain to take a look." The younger brother replied, "Okay, then let's clean up, and I'll carry you up the mountain." ”

Halfway up the mountain, my mother felt thirsty and wanted to drink.

The son searched everywhere but could not find a drop of water. In the end, they only saw a skeleton with a shell of water in its skull and a small yellow snake swimming in it.

The son brought the water to his mother and said, "Mother, I can't find water anywhere, but I see a shell of water in the shriveled skeleton braincase, and a yellow snake bathing inside." ”

The mother was thirsty, so she said, "Whether it is a shriveled braincase or a plump braincase, bring me a drink." She immediately drank the water in one gulp.

After drinking it, my mother felt that her eyes were much brighter and her mood was much better.

After resting for a while, they continued towards the top of the mountain.

At the top of the mountain, my mother said she was hungry and wanted to eat. The son searched around again and found a house, but there was nothing else to eat, only a black hen.

The chicken rests day and night on the peach tree next to the house, and the owner is reluctant to sell it.

So they had to get a few eggs, nine in all. When borrowing the owner's stove to cook eggs, open an egg and it turns out to be a double yellow egg.

The son ate the sweet potatoes himself, and seeing that his mother had an appetite, he gave all nine eggs to his mother to eat.

The mother ate these nine eggs in one go, and miraculously recovered from the disease. Her eyes were clearer than before, and she no longer needed her son to carry her, so they went down the mountain and returned home.

After returning home, the younger brother said to his brother: "Brother, it's really thanks to you that you are the medicine king, even my mother's eyes can't be cured, I just took my mother to the back mountain to play for a while." ”

The Medicine King Bodhisattva replied, "Brother, it's not that I can't cure my mother's eyes, but I can't find specific medicinal herbs. ”

The younger brother asked, "Then tell me, what medicinal materials do you need?" "He wanted to test his brother.

The medicine king Bodhisattva replied: "A disease like Niang's requires thousand-year-old skeleton water, yellow snake bath soup, black chicken perched on peach trees, and one of the nine eggs is a double yellow egg. See where you can find these. ”

After hearing this, the younger brother sighed: "Oh, my brother is really a medicine king." ”

Carry the great wish

According to the "Buddha's Teachings on the Two Bodhisattvas of Medicine King Yaoshang", after becoming bodhisattvas, the medicine king and Yaoshang made four great wishes:

The first wish is that even before I became a Buddha, if any sentient beings hear my name, may they be able to get rid of the four hundred and four diseases in their bodies and heal just by chanting my name.

The second wish is to hope that those beings who have wrong opinions, foolishness, ignorance, and clinging to evil paths will never be tormented by suffering; When I become a Buddha, I hope that all sentient beings born on the mainland will become enlightened, practice Mahayana Buddhism on an equal footing, and no longer be bound by samsara.

The third wish is to hope that all beings with the Three Evil Interests who exist in Yan Futi and other worlds, once they hear my name, will be able to stay away from the identity of the Three Evil Interests forever; Even if they had fallen into the three evil tastes, I swore not to achieve the Buddha-fruit of supreme enlightenment.

The fourth wish is that to those beings who worship devotedly and contemplate my body attentively, may they remove the three obstacles in their hearts, just as pure glass can reflect the light inside and outside, and be able to see the pure body of the Buddha with their own eyes. For those beings who have been able to see the pure body of the Buddha, may they never lose their wisdom and always maintain equal enlightenment.
