Zhao Dayu was born in Guangzhou in 1961. In 1973, Guangzhou reopened amateur sports schools, and Zhao Dayu was also selected into the local amateur sports schools and began to receive professional and systematic football training under the two coaches Luo Rongman and Ye Peizhi. In 1976, Zhao Dayu followed the Guangdong Provincial Team to Xiangfan, Hubei Province to participate in the National Key Amateur Sports School Football Divisional Competition, but unfortunately the age was too old, and the specific results of the competition could not be queried.

In the first game of the group stage, Zhao Dayu scored the first goal for the Chinese team in the game, making the team 2-0 to Win Hong Kong, China, and then in the match against Morocco, Zhao Dayu grabbed the opposing defender's mistake in the last minute before the final and scored a goal to make the score 3-3. The Chinese team advanced to the semi-finals with an unbeaten record of 1 win and 1 draw.

On July 3, 1986, the national team played a teaching match with the Beijing youth team during training in Beijing, and as a result, not long after the game began, Zhao Dayu was knocked down by the Beijing youth team defender Bi Shengyi during a breakthrough in the frontcourt, accompanied by a terrible scream on the field. Zhao Dayu was immediately taken to the hospital, and the examination result was a comminuted fracture of the tibia and fibula on the left ankle joint, which was more serious than Gu Guangming's injury a year ago, and the hospital experts said it was difficult to fully recover.
