The first one: Tuoba Tao and his favored minister Cui Hao
At Cui Hao's suggestion and instigation, Emperor Taiwu Tuoba Tao decided to destroy the Buddha, and he ordered that Buddha statues and sutras be destroyed and burned, monasteries demolished, and monks buried alive. A large number of monasteries were destroyed, monks were killed, the whole country was in a state of wrath, and Cui Hao, who advocated the extermination of Buddha, was also exterminated in 450 AD, when people said that he had suffered retribution for destroying Buddha. And the emperor Tuoba Tao, who was ruthless in destroying Buddha, was also killed by eunuchs two years later
Second place: Yuwen Yong, Emperor Wudi of Northern Zhou
In 574, Yuwen Yong issued an edict that regardless of the Buddhist path, it must be restored, otherwise it will not be killed, and the monastery, Taoist temple, and scripture were also burned together, it is said that at that time, the fire burned for three days and three nights, thick smoke blocked the sun, and the trees around the monastery were not spared, and the bodies of those killed monks and Taoists were piled up on the hillside, and Yuwen Yong's action made the northern Buddhism almost extinct. The emperor who destroyed Buddha died of a violent illness the following year at the age of 35, and his actions also affected his descendants, and in 581 Yang Jian deposed Northern Zhou and established the Sui Dynasty. In less than two years, 43 descendants of the Yuwen royal family were exterminated, and the rest of the Yuwen clan was basically killed.
Third place: Tang Wuzong Li Yan
Emperor Wuzong of Tang Li Yan believed in Taoism, and in 845 AD, he issued an edict explicitly ordering the demolition of more than 4,600 temples and more than 40,000 small monasteries, the burning of a large number of Buddhist scriptures, the burning of Buddha statues and the casting of money, and forced more than 260,000 monks and nuns to return to the laity, and ancient Indian and Japanese monks were not spared. Foreign Islam, Zenism, Manichaeism, Nestorianism, and Uighurism also suffered, and the corresponding monasteries were demolished, and 70 female Manichaeans in Beijing committed suicide without shelter; Most Uighurs died on the way to expulsion... History says that it will chang and destroy the Buddha
However, this decree was not fully implemented, and many local edicts did not implement it at all, believing that doing so would harm Yang Shou, so the decree gradually faded amid widespread popular grievances. In the following year, the people spread the theory that Emperor Wuzong destroyed the Buddha and lived for 10 years, and Yin Cao demanded his life. Soon after, Emperor Wuzong suddenly fell ill and died at the age of 32.
Fourth place: Chai Rong of Later Zhou Shizong
In the second year of Chai Rong's succession, he issued an edict to destroy the Buddhist temple. In the territory of the temples, except for those with the emperor's inscription, only one temple is left in each county, and everything else is destroyed. A total of 30,360 temples were demolished, Buddha statues were destroyed to cast money, and nearly one million monks and nuns were forced to return to the laity.
It is said that there is a bronze Great Guanyin Bodhisattva in Zhenzhou Dabei Temple who is extremely effective, and everyone who went to smash the Buddha statue broke their wrists and died, and no one dared to move again, so Chai Rong personally used a big axe to cut the bodhisattva's chest and destroy the statue to cast money.
In 959, Chai Rong's chest sores festered and died, which was reported as a report for destroying the Buddha's statue. Chai Rong's 5-year-old youngest son succeeded to the throne less than 1 year later, and was seized by his forbidden army commander Zhao Kuangyin, and ended up in defeat.
