So more than a hundred years ago, what impact did this patriotic movement led by students and workers have on the future of China, and why was this movement able to sweep the country and promote the Chinese proletariat onto the historical political stage? And it all started with the Paris Peace Conference.

May Fourth Movement

In November 1918, World War I ended. In January 1919, the Paris Peace Conference on sanctions and sharing the spoils of the defeated countries was held in France, and China attended the meeting. As a victorious power, the Chinese representative proposed to recover Germany's sovereignty in Shandong, abolish the "21 Articles", and abolish foreign spheres of influence in China, but they were rejected. And under Japan's coercion and lure, the Paris Peace Conference, led by Britain, the United States, and France, passed a resolution intending to transfer Germany's rights and interests in Shandong to Japan, and the Chinese representative protested that it was invalid, in order not to offend the Western powers, the Beiyang government had no choice but to compromise and sign the Treaty of Versailles.

When the news came back to China, the whole country was shocked! On May 3, 1919, a large number of patriotic student representatives held a secret rally in Beijing, denouncing the incompetence of the Beiyang government, calling on everyone to rise up to save the country, and formulating a patriotic movement that gathered in Tiananmen Square the next day.

Vows to the death to fight to return me Qingdao

On the afternoon of May 4, 1919, more than 3,000 students from Beijing gathered in Tiananmen Square to display patriotic slogans such as "Fight to the death and return Qingdao," "Abolish the 21st Article," and "Dispute sovereignty abroad, remove national thieves from within."

This was the May Fourth Movement that shook the whole country.

However, this patriotic march was brutally suppressed by the Beiyang warlord military and police, and more than 30 student representatives were arrested.

Soon the news spread throughout the country, and soon student and worker representatives from Shanghai, Changsha, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Jinan and other places responded and held large-scale marches in support of the Beijing student representatives, demanding the release of arrested students and severe punishment of traitors. Although suppressed by warlords in various places during this period, patriotic enthusiasm did not diminish in the slightest.

On June 5, 1919, the Shanghai workers' strike began, and at its peak, the number of strikers exceeded 100,000, and the main force of the patriotic movement shifted from Beijing to Shanghai. At this time, workers from all over the country responded and expressed solidarity with Shanghai.

At this time, the patriotic enthusiasm of the whole country had reached its peak, and the Beiyang government felt unprecedented pressure and had to remove the traitors Cao, Zhang, and Lu.

On June 28, 1919, more than 30,000 patriotic Chinese gathered at the door of the residence of the Chinese delegation, shouting together "no signing"! "Whoever dares to sign will be killed!"

In the end, in the midst of the nationwide patriotic demonstration, the Beiyang government had to compromise, and the Chinese delegation refused to sign the Treaty of Versailles. The May Fourth Movement scored a great victory.

Since modern times, feudal China has repeatedly shown weakness and incompetence in the face of invasion by Western powers, and signed many extremely unequal treaties that have humiliated the country, causing serious damage to China's sovereignty. In particular, in 1915, the Yuan Shikai government and Japan signed the 21 Articles with the intention of "destroying China", which made the people of the whole country feel a great shame. In the face of the government's repeated submission to the great powers, the Chinese nation is in danger of extinction. The Paris Peace Conference gave 40,000 Chinese compatriots the opportunity to vent.

After the May Fourth Movement, a large number of patriotic young people with lofty aspirations have realized that feudal warlords cannot shoulder the heavy responsibility of history, and have begun to explore the road of anti-imperialist and anti-feudal salvation. The victory of the October Revolution in Russia gave hope to the vast number of patriotic young people in China, and it was also from this time that the Chinese proletariat entered the stage of history. Two years later, in July 1921, the Communist Party of China was born! Therefore, the May Fourth Movement directly affected the founding of the Communist Party of China.
