An army without a motherland: a decisive battle in the Golden Triangle, the forgotten national army

In November 1948, the Huaihai Campaign came to an end, and the PLA large corps surrounded and interspersed with movement, dividing and agglomerating the Nationalist army in the movement.

A village called Makoko, not famous before, no one knew of his existence, but because of this battle, he became famous. Li Mi, commander of the Eighth Army of the National Revolutionary Army, was leading his 13th Army to fight nearby, and this village called Maguzi stood like a nail in the center of his garrison. Since other combat units were performing combat missions, Li Mi decided to personally lead his own unit, the Eighth Army, to take down this small village, and let out this evil breath.

With the support of the air force and artillery, this small dilapidated village was under great pressure to attack. Looking at the rising smoke, Li Mi felt very satisfied, under such a density and intensity of firepower, I believe that the PLA holding on to this small village has basically lost everything. Therefore, Li Mi ordered his subordinates to enter the village to clean up the battlefield.

However, when his subordinates entered the village, the dense sound of machine guns and the explosion of grenades quickly stirred Li Mi's spirits to a high degree of tension, and his eyelids jumped. Faced with such a sudden blow of firepower, Li Mi's Eighth Army had no power to parry at all, and suffered heavy losses. Until the end of December, when Huang Baitao was killed in battle and Du Yuming fled in embarrassment, Li Mi did not take the village in the plain.

According to the plan, Li Mi's Eighth Army was used as a rear force to cover the retreat of the large army. The PLA pursued all the way, the Eighth Army collapsed, and Li Mi, in the chaos, changed into soldiers' clothes and pretended to be wounded to escape.

After returning to Nanjing, the chairman was very angry with Li Mi, but due to the Huaihai Campaign, the high-level generals lost too much, and they were really reluctant to deal with a hero who burned 20 Japanese planes during the War of Resistance, so Li Mi was sent to Yunnan to garrison and form a new unit.

Shortly after arriving in Kunming, Lu Han, the chairman of Yunnan Province, declared an uprising and captured a large number of troops, including Li Mi. Although Li Mi was timid and afraid of death, he was extremely loyal to the chairman, but under the persuasion of his wife Long Huiyu, he agreed to go out of the city to persuade the Nationalist army besieging Kunming. However, when Li Mi left the city, he quickly joined the Nationalist army and attacked the city of Kunming. But defeated by the fierce attack of the defenders of the city and our army, he fled to Taiwan, abandoning his wife.

After Li Mi fled to Taiwan, he abandoned his own troops, just as he abandoned his troops during the Huaihai Campaign, but more than 2,000 Nationalist troops under Li Mi were loyal to the national capital and unwilling to surrender to the People's Liberation Army, so under the leadership of Li Guohui, commander of the 709th Regiment, all retired to the Golden Triangle of Burma and established the Republic of China Reconstruction Army.

Located at the junction of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, the Golden Triangle is highly forested and has a complex terrain. When the Myanmar authorities knew that such an army had entered Myanmar, they immediately organized an army to attack and encircle it, but under the leadership of Li Guohui, using guerrilla tactics, the Burmese army was defeated and retreated. So, in the Golden Triangle completely stood its footing. During this period, Li Guohui quickly grew to more than 10,000 people by collecting the remnants of the Nationalist army, becoming the largest military force in northern Myanmar.

After learning about this army, the chairman was shocked and angry, shocked that he still had such a capable force, and angry that Li Mi actually left such a force behind. So, at the request of the chairman, Li Mi arrived in Myanmar by plane and met Li Guohui. In front of the former chief, Li Guohui was extremely happy, however, seeing Li Guohui's achievements, Li Mi instead gave birth to jealousy and guardedness.

At this time, after Liu Yuanlin, the former deputy commander of the Eighth Army, was released by our army, he quickly rushed to the Golden Triangle to join Li Mi, and with the close cooperation of the two, the army was reorganized and the Eighth Army was rebuilt, and Li Guohui was also demoted to division commander. At the same time, accumulating strength, launched a counteroffensive against Yunnan and occupied Lincang County. Chen Geng, who was in Yunnan at that time, was furious when he found out, so he quickly organized troops to counterattack, and under the attack of our army, Li Mi once again collapsed and retreated into Burma.

This defeat made Li Mi realize that whether it was the combat effectiveness of the army or the funds, he was no longer allowed to launch any further attacks against the people's army and people's power of New China. As a result, he began to concentrate on preparing for attacks by the Burmese military and preparing military resources.

The Golden Triangle is a poor place, but it is ideally located at the crossroads of the three countries and opium poppy cultivation is extensive. Therefore, Li Mi used the power of the army to expel all other local forces, monopolized the Golden Triangle region, became the largest drug lord, and the number of troops quickly reached tens of thousands.

With the expansion of personnel and abundant funds, Li Mi began to lead his troops south, and at one point attacked the central region of Burma. At this time, Li Mi was so proud that he did not dare to attack the PLA, but it did not prevent him from becoming the king of Burma. After fighting Li Mi several times, Myanmar found that it was never an opponent, so it asked India for help. India, unfamiliar with the local environment, was also defeated by Li Mi. In the end, the Myanmar authorities had no choice but to put pressure on Chairman Chiang through the United Nations.

The chairman was furious when he got the news, and originally planned to let Li Mi rectify his army and go north to Yunnan to cooperate with his plan to counterattack the mainland, but who knew that he would become the king of Burma. So, in 1954, a telegram recalled Li Mi to Taiwan. Although the remnants of the Golden Triangle lost Li Mi's command, they did not lose their combat effectiveness and were still entrenched in the Golden Triangle region. It was not until 1960 that Myanmar and our army jointly sent troops to end the entrenched rule of this group of remnants in the Golden Triangle and completely withdrew the Kuomintang army from the Golden Triangle.
