Day 2️⃣

Camping in the wild to watch tapir lick clay (Tapir Clay Lick)

After breakfast, drive through the high forest to Atalaya, near the Alto Madre de Dios, from where you transfer to a motorized boat (60 hp) and go down the river. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to see many birds such as Herons, vultures, cormorants, etc., stopping to enjoy the hot springs along the way. After 2pm, head back to the Manu Bamboo Eco Hotel for a break to replenish fresh water and hike for 1 hour, of which 30 to 45 minutes are in the rainforest, with the chance to see toucans and macaws. The destination is a wild platform with mattresses, mosquito nets, blankets and toilets located behind the building, where the night will be spent tonight to observe tapirs licking clay, wildlife researchers have listed many animals with similar behaviors, it has long been known that birds, monkeys, tapirs and many other animals, including people, eat different types of clay.

Different clays contain different chemicals, and one of the important chemicals is salt. Salt is essential for all animals to maintain a healthy nervous system as well as a healthy heart and muscle. Tapirs are a typical example of clay-eating animals and often appear in documentaries. Tapirs will either lick clay or cover themselves with it, and similar documentaries will also show monkeys eating termite mounds (clay as the main component). There are also opportunities to see deer, wild boars (Peccaries), Spider monkeys, Red howler monkeys, crowned birds (Guans) and parakeets.
