Until October 25, 1971, with 76 votes in favour, 35 votes against and 17 abstentions, the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, deciding to restore all the rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations and recognizing the representative of the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China in the United Nations. This is a victory for New China's diplomacy and the result of the joint efforts of all peace-loving and justice-upholding countries in the world. This historical event has enabled the Chinese people, who account for a quarter of the world's population, to re-enter the United Nations arena, and has also made the United Nations truly the most universal, representative and authoritative international organization, and the forces for world peace and development have also been unprecedentedly strengthened.
