Apple announced that the second-generation HomePod comes with temperature and humidity sensors

It is reported that two years after the discontinuation, the original HomePod is now back in the second generation of incarnations. The new model includes changes to the speaker array and the inclusion of temperature and humidity sensors.

The second-generation HomePod features the same 4-inch high-throw woofer as before. The new five-horn-loaded tweeter replaces the seven on the original model. The six microphones of the original model have been replaced by four new far-field microphones. There is also an internal low-frequency calibration microphone for automatic bass correction.

Like the original model, the new HomePod can perform automatic room correction by listening to feedback from the microphone and calibrating itself. It has the Apple S7 SoC, which helps calculate audio and adjust in real time.

Like other HomePod models, the new HomePod also supports stereo pairing; Just put two of them in one room and you'll be asked if you want to pair them.

In addition to being used as a stereo speaker, HomePod can play Dolby Atmos audio from Apple TV 4K. As before, you need the same HomePod model to create a stereo pairing, as the first and second generations cannot be paired together.

The new HomePod also includes temperature and humidity sensors. These can report real-time information around you or can be used to automatically trigger certain functions, such as turning on the air conditioner or closing blinds when a preset temperature target is reached.

As some of you may recall, these same sensors were discovered on the HomePod mini not so long ago, but never enabled. Now it looks like Apple will enable them on the HomePod mini in a future update.

Sound recognition can also listen carefully for beeps from smoke or carbon monoxide detectors and send you alerts on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. HomePod mini will also enable this feature.

The design is basically unchanged, but the new model is slightly shorter and lighter than before. It comes in two colors, white and the new light gray Midnight variant, both of which come with a color-matched power cord that can now be removed.

The second-generation HomePod costs $299, the same price as when the first generation was discontinued.
