In life, if we want our teaching to have the desired effect on the child's development, sometimes we need to add some supplementary strategies to the child's various learning and training methods. This time, we have brought some supportive strategies that can be used in the process of teaching children, which you can refer to according to the specific situation of your child.
The supporting strategies to be shared with you are imitation, rehearsal and story teaching, which are mainly aimed at promoting children's development, and increasing children's expectations for learning or training and understanding of teaching content and procedures.
imitate
This strategy is mainly for children to observe the process of others completing a certain behavior correctly, so that the child can accurately imitate the same behavior. It should be noted that for autistic children, in order to learn the correct steps of a certain behavior through imitation, the child's attention must be placed on the important part of the observed behavior.
Otherwise, the child's focus may shift and thus ignore and imitate important parts of the relevant behavior. Therefore, when using imitation as a teaching strategy, we must properly guide the child's attention and point out the areas that need to be focused on for the child every time.
Preview
This strategy is more suitable for children's skill teaching, through rehearsal can allow children to get some clear and clear hints (can be visual, body movement, language) before using skills. In order to allow children to better understand and learn, we should provide visual cues for children according to their preferences and abilities.
For example, show a picture to indicate what activities your child will do next or what might change. You can also show your child sequential pictures to remind them of the steps to complete the activity, or show them a video of completing the activity correctly. Also, before the official activity, we can take the child to read a teaching story about completing the activity (or program).
Story teaching
This strategy is mainly to compile the content or skills we want to teach the child into a short story (such as going to the toilet, washing, dressing, etc.), and according to the content of the story, show the child in the form of pictures. Therefore, using this strategy can also give children strong support when teaching.
For example, read a daily teaching story on how to dress the child and allow the child to consult the book at any time if he/she wishes. If the child has difficulty reading, we can match the important content of the story with pictures that can serve as clues to the steps/procedures for dressing. It should be noted that each page can introduce a step in 1-3 sentences, and describe it in affirmative language, without describing what should be avoided, etc.
The above is the sharing of supportive strategies, parents can refer to the specific situation of their children, if it is not clear whether the above strategies are suitable for children, or do not know where to start, it is recommended that parents can consult experts or professional teachers.
