Kunming, 24 Oct (Xinhua) -- In the golden autumn, the 300-mu perennial rice "Yunda 107" planted in the terraces of Nansa Village, Yuanjiang County, Yunnan Province, is golden. The reporter learned from Yunnan University on the 24th that recently, the rice expert group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs conducted field production inspection and acceptance of the perennial rice "Yunda 107" demonstration area, and the yield measurement results showed that the yield of 100 mu of contiguous late rice was 464.8 kg.

It is understood that the perennial rice "Yunda 107" demonstration area is organized and implemented by Yunnan University, Yunnan Agricultural Technology Extension Station, Yuxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Yuanjiang County Rural Industry Development Center. Perennial rice only needs to be planted once in suitable areas, and from the second year (season) there is no need to plow the field, buy seeds, sow, raise seedlings and plant seedlings, and only need to do a good job of field management to achieve light and simplified rice production for many years (seasons). This technology significantly reduces seed and labor input, streamlines many cumbersome production links, greatly reduces the intensity of field labor, and is a light and simplified production technology for no-till rice cultivation.
The main agricultural industry of the villagers in The Yuanjiang South is mainly rice production and cattle raising, and the cultivation of perennial rice can achieve the planting of 2 crops of rice and 3 rice straws a year, and can also be planted continuously for many years. The "one kind of three harvests" model of perennial rice not only solves the problem of rations for the people of Nansa Village but also solves the forage of cattle, and achieves stable grain and increased income, which is a typical model for the sustainable development of rural revitalization industry.
The Team of Hu Fengyi of Yunnan University, together with relevant units, with the support of Projects such as the Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Plan, after more than 20 years of arduous exploration, invented the method of using the asexual propagation characteristics of Changxiong wild rice to cultivate perennial rice, originally constructed the theoretical system of perennial rice breeding and cultivation technology system, realized the breakthrough of "0 to 1" in the breeding of perennial grain crops, supplemented and improved rice breeding and cultivation technology, and opened up a new way for the green ecological and low-carbon development of rice.
So far, Yunnan University has cultivated perennial rice varieties such as "Perennial Rice 23", "Yunda 25" and "Yunda 107" that adapt to multiple ecological regions, of which "Perennial Rice 23" passed the approval of Yunnan Province in 2018, which is the world's first approved perennial crop variety for commercial production and application, which is of landmark significance in the breeding of perennial crops. Since 2018, the National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center has organized experiments and demonstrations of perennial rice in Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hainan and other provinces (regions) in the southern rice areas of the country, and has accumulated more than 120,000 mu of trial and demonstration applications.
In addition, perennial rice technology has also been tested and demonstrated in Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, Iran, Uganda, Ethiopia and other countries along the "Belt and Road" initiative, showing great development potential and broad application prospects, contributing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to the world's rice production.
