On 25 November, the first large-diameter undersea shield tunnel connecting Macao and Hengqin, the Macao Light Rail Extension Hengqin Line Project, held a breakthrough ceremony at the Macao side of the project.

For the first time in Macao, the shield method was used for construction

The Macao Light Rail Transit Extension Hengqin Line project is the first project of the Macao SAR Government to use the shield method in rail transit construction, the shield tunnel is about 900 meters long, and the cave body is all in soft strata such as silt layer, silty soil layer, silty clay layer, etc.

The shield tunnel project was built by Nanguang Group, undertaken by Nanguang Real Estate-China Civil Engineering Cooperative Operation, and participated by China Railway 16th Bureau and other units. In order to ensure the smooth progress of the project, the project team planned in advance and tailored a more efficient and adaptable large-diameter EPB shield machine "Aoqin No. 1" according to the natural environment, geological conditions and excavation risk points where the project is located, so as to provide a strong guarantee for the construction of the submarine tunnel.

It is understood that the main building of the Hengqin Line of the Macao Light Rail Extension consists of a viaduct, a tunnel under the river and two stations, with a total length of about 2.2 kilometers, of which the tunnel section is about 900 meters.

The two stations are "HE1 Station" located next to the current Lotus Bridge Station of the Macau Light Rail Transit Taipa Line, and "HE2 Station" located on the lower level of the basement of Hengqin Port. The line starts at "HE1 Station" in an elevated manner, gradually descends from the elevated along the direction of the Lotus Bridge, and enters Hengqin Zhuhai in the form of a river bottom tunnel through the Shizimen Waterway, ending at "HE2 Station" at Hengqin Port.

The Macao Light Rail Extension Hengqin Line project is a key livelihood project of the Macao SAR Government and will be completed and put into use in 2024. The project is an important passenger corridor for public transport in the Zhuhai-Macao region, and after completion, it will create a comfortable and convenient cross-border travel environment for residents of the two places, and help Macao integrate into the "one-hour living circle" of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as soon as possible.
