With its own military strength, the United States, which has always liked to provoke trouble, does not always win wars. They never imagined that they would fall into the quagmire of attacking Vietnam.
To this day, the Vietnam War is the longest lasting war in the history of American warfare. Behind this was not only the heroic resistance of the Vietnamese people, but also the weapons and support provided by China and the Soviet Union to win this arduous war.
In the 14-year war, although there were no advanced guns and cannons of the United States, the Vietnamese people also designed countless "fool traps" with their own ingenuity, which seemed to be inlethal, but caused heavy casualties among American soldiers and a large number of weapons and equipment.
What is so magical about these seemingly "pediatric" war traps? And how was it designed?
Extremely heavy taste: bamboo tip trap
According to statistics, up to 58,200 American soldiers died in the Vietnam War, 60,616 were seriously wounded, and up to 2,500 disappeared or became local prisoners. Especially in the second half of the war, nearly 20% of the US military was killed and injured by traps placed in the shadows.
Even American soldiers, who luckily did not fall into the trap, watched their companions fall into the trap and were unable to help, and were deeply disgusted and psychologically devastated.
Although Vietnam's military strength is far behind that of the United States, it lags far behind in terms of weapons and equipment. But the Vietnamese people used their brains and ingenuity to devise a wealth of deadly traps, using local advantages. Second to none is the bamboo-tip trap that terrifies American soldiers.
This trap was mainly laid by Vietnamese guerrillas along routes where American soldiers might advance. They would dig a few traps two or three meters deep along the road, and then lay a long layer of iron or bamboo nails underneath, with the nail tip facing up. Of course, the Korean people are not satisfied with just letting these invaders suffer from flesh and skin, and they will also roast nail tips with fire for a long time to enhance their hardness and toughness.
They then coat dense bamboo and iron nails with human and livestock manure and urine. Simple experience tells them that after being poked, stool can cause wound infection. The two or three meters of pit and smooth soil walls made them unable to start, unable to climb up, so they could only turn over and over and be pierced by bamboo nails with feces.
After the weapons were arranged, the guerrillas would also lay palm leaves, keeping them soft and concealed, allowing American soldiers to sit straight on bamboo spikes. Of course, after setting up the game, they will also pay attention to the mark, so as not to fall into the trap when their own people run by inadvertently.
According to the records of war correspondents at the time, at least four American soldiers fell into this bamboo trap, which greatly weakened the morale of the team. Because they fell in groups, it was difficult for them to pull themselves out. The Vietnamese guerrillas would then open fire and, if they gained the upper hand, would come to collect their weapons.
Don't look at this practice of digging pits and burying bamboo nails is very "pediatric", but it is extremely lethal and simple, and local women and children will also do it.
A 1967 U.S. Field Medical Corps report showed that more than 300 American soldiers fell into bamboo traps every three weeks, causing serious casualties. It was not until the 1980 Geneva Conventions that bamboo traps were explicitly prohibited from being used as weapons in war.
But ironically, which cannon machine gun is not more lethal than bamboo traps? Nor is there a uniform prohibition on the use of these weapons.
Secret Artifact: Long Nail Bamboo Whip
The Vietnamese people also know that their military strength is not half that of the United States, and in order to win the war, they have also adopted the strategic plan of underground guerrilla operations, and have also designed many very useful secret calculation artifacts, one of which is the bamboo whip trap.
Although the main material of this weapon is also nails, the method and usage are completely different.
They would collect a large number of bamboo tubes, penetrate them with bullets with bamboo nails, seal the lids, set a tripwire next to the bamboo tubes, and bury them in the soil or hide them among the trees.
When American soldiers are creeping forward with weapons, once the tripping rope of the bamboo tube is inadvertently triggered, the bamboo pole will stab the enemy's body at a very high speed, and the top of the bamboo nail is also stained with venom and feces, and when the American soldiers are crying out, the bullet will detonate on them.
This trap is quite small, but extremely lethal and has a fairly high fatality rate. Compared to bamboo tip traps, it is also more hidden. Because sometimes the bullet also goes to the lower body of the soldier, even if it does not cause death, it is properly incapacitated.
Head blossoms: skull hammer
Just by listening to the name, I know that after the trick, I am afraid that my head will not be saved.
The core body of the cranial hammer is generally composed of coconut or wooden stakes, and then various sharp spikes are inserted into the body and penetrated, looking like a hedgehog or durian. Of course, the tips of these spikes were also coated with venom and feces, and when the American soldiers touched the tripwire, the skull crushing hammer would accelerate like a meteor and pierce the enemy's head and bleed.
Generally, the skull crusher will be hidden in the middle of the leaves above and will weigh more than forty kilograms. If you are accidentally hit in the head, you may also pierce the temples, pierce the nostrils, ear canals, etc., and the picture is extremely terrifying.
At that time, many American soldiers were blinded by this trap, bleeding from their heads, and the lethality was almost as good as the snake pit below.
Terrifying: the Snake Pit
Snake pit is one of the more classic Vietnamese guerrillas. They would fix a dozen poisonous snakes on bamboo poles or hide them in backpacks. It is mostly used when enemy troops step on traps, stimulating poisonous snakes to gnaw directly on their legs. Occasionally fighting head-on, when the enemy approached, the Vietnamese guerrillas would unexpectedly release poisonous snakes, making them tighten the neck of the opponent, and go down and get poisonous straight down.
Bamboo pit viper because of its strong toxicity, often as the most commonly used poisonous snake when laying traps, if bitten by this snake, within a few minutes the wound will not stop bleeding, there is no time to bandage and disinfect and then all the surrounding tissues are necrosis, and the pain of drilling the heart makes people unable to stand up, let alone walk.
If the venom is not cleaned out within ten minutes, the swelling will spread from the wound to the whole body, and finally the poison will die. It is also highly poisonous with the bamboo pit viper, as well as the Malayan golden ring snake, basically as long as one bite, the small life is difficult to protect.
Tricks: Canned grenades
If you think the above traps are average, you are underestimating the Vietnamese people. Even the leftover cans in life will be magically turned into weapons by them.
They will take out a grenade, pull off the safety bolt and put it in the can, while attaching a tripwire. When American soldiers thought they had delicious cans on the table and picked them up, they triggered the tripwire device and directly detonated the grenade.
In addition, the Vietnamese people also seized on the enemy's penchant for collecting flags, and they would deliberately bury grenades under their flags, and when American soldiers rushed to search for the flags, they were directly destroyed with half their lives.
In this way, in war, it is not that whoever is stronger will definitely win more wars. On the contrary, those who rely on wisdom and stratagem to carefully design the layout can win the war and defend their frontier territory.
