The anchovy green-biting cuckoo is the largest of the biting crayons , measuring 38–41 cm in length. Plus the tail feathers are up to 70 cm long. Weight 180-210 g. Its toes are different from other birds, with 1 and 2 toes backwards and 3 and 4 toes forward, which is heteroto-shaped.
The anchovy has an extremely ornate appearance, green feathers, a narrow half-moon-shaped white ring on the red chest, bright patina and red feathers, and can be seen from different angles from metallic green to blue-purple, usually with bright feathers with a metallic luster. The feathers of the first wing usually obscure the tail feathers, while only males during the breeding season will see the long tail feathers.
Males also have a helmet-like crown hair. Male adults have yellow beaks and females are black. The male green-biting crater has smooth long-tailed coverts, phoenix-like tail feathers. Juvenile anchovy green-tailed grebees retain a pair of primitive claws, like those of Archaeopteryx or pterosaurs, which disappear as adults.
It inhabits the tropical jungles of southern Mexico as well as Central America, with pristine moist mountain cloud forests, ravines and cliffs of dense vegetation, forest edges, pastures, and altitudes between 900 - 3200 meters. In Costa Rica, migration to lower altitudes has been recorded during the non-breeding season.
Fast flight speed, known for its very beautiful feathers, one of the most beautiful birds in the Americas, occupies an important place in the myths and legends of Central America. Omnivorous, insects in the jungle, fruits, frogs are their food.
It is found in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.
