In the summer of 1869, Monet and Renoir went to La Grenouillère, meaning "frog pool", in a popular resort on the Seine near Paris, to set up an easel and paint side by side.
In September, Monet wrote to fellow artist Frédéric Bazille: "I do have a dream, a painting about a frog pool bath, for which I made some bad sketches, but it was just a dream. Renoir, who had been here for two months, also wanted to paint such a picture. ”
