For scientists, discovering an entirely new animal species is quite exciting. Not only will you go down in history, but in most cases you'll also be able to name this new species.
Some scientists name new species based on where they were discovered, sometimes even mixing their own names. Research duo Luiz Rocha and Yi-Kai Tea discovered a new bright purple fish near Zanzibar on the east coast of Africa, and when they got their name, they were inspired by something deep inside them: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This fish is an unknown cactus fish. Its bright purple appearance and its African homeland are reminiscent of the marvel-made material "Vibranium", leading scientists to name the new fish Vibranium. In the Marvel Comics, Vibranium appears in Wakanda, and the Black Panther's suit and Captain America's shield are all made from this material. Its scientific name is: Cirrhilabrus Wakanda (Wakanda silkfin parrot).
Of course, the industry has different opinions on whether scientific naming should cite popular culture. The researchers say they hope to use the naming to appeal to people who don't care much about scientific discoveries.
