"Previous nutrition studies often only focus on the growth of aquatic animals, while precision nutrition needs to study the changes in the nutritional needs of aquatic animals at different growth stages, different feed raw materials and different breeding conditions, while comprehensively considering the growth, health and quality of aquatic animals." Professor Ai Qinghui, Dean of the School of Fisheries, Ocean University of China, introduced.

A few days ago, with the support of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Marine Fish Industry Technology System and other projects, the project team led by the Ocean University of China and composed of the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences and other units completed the project of "Construction and Industrialization Application of Precision Nutrition Technology System for Marine Aquaculture Fish" after decades of joint research of industry, university and research, and won the second prize of the 2023 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

"In the breeding process, marine fish in different growth stages, different environments, need different nutrients, if you can accurately regulate the feeding nutrition, you can make marine fish grow rapidly in a suitable environment, provide better quality aquatic products for the people's table, but also better protect the breeding environment." As the first person to complete the project, Ai Qinghui gave a specific introduction to the research and development and application of the project.

To achieve precision nutrition, we first need to grasp the metabolic characteristics of aquatic animals. Ai Qinghui and his team devoted themselves to research, taking the representative species of marine fish aquaculture such as large yellow croaker, sea bass and grouper as the research objects, and deeply analyzed the nutritional metabolism and nutritional immunity regulation mechanism of marine fish by using nutrition, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics methods, and constructed a database of precise nutritional needs of marine fish, and on this basis, they made a breakthrough in the efficient utilization of fishmeal and fish oil technology and the application technology of green targeted feed additives, and successfully developed a variety of high-efficiency green compound feed for marine fish.

Ai Qinghui led the team members to carry out scientific research experiments.

Ai Qinghui introduced that the team not only built and improved the database of precise nutritional needs of marine fish, but also customized a nutritional diet map for marine fish. At the same time, the team also systematically carried out research on the substitution of fishmeal and fish oil by a variety of fat sources and protein sources, and deeply analyzed the mechanism of single plant protein substitution of fishmeal to inhibit the growth of marine fish, and analyzed the molecular mechanism of high proportion of vegetable oil substitution fish oil to induce fat deposition and inflammation in marine fish. Based on the above research, the team proposed a "nutrient balance strategy" and created a low-fishmeal and low-fish oil feed formulation technology, which effectively reduced the use of fishmeal and fish oil in the feed, and greatly saved the feed production cost.

In addition, based on precision nutrition research, Ai Qinghui's team screened a number of key targets that can regulate the metabolism and immune response of marine fish, and successfully developed a variety of new green targeted feed additives and their application systems from the perspective of growth, health, safety and environmental protection, which effectively promoted the growth and health of farmed fish, reduced the excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus in feed, and realized the protection of the water ecological environment.

The efficient transformation of scientific and technological achievements can better empower the development of the industry. Through cooperation and promotion with leading enterprises such as Tongwei Co., Ltd., Guangdong Hengxing Feed Industry Co., Ltd. and Guangdong Yuehai Feed Group Co., Ltd., the scientific research results have produced significant economic, social and ecological benefits, reversed the long-term dependence of the mainland aquatic feed industry on fishmeal and fish oil resources, and composed a beautiful movement on the road to building a "blue granary".

"There is no end to scientific research, and every day is a new beginning." Ai Qinghui said that in the future, he will continue to work with his team members to deepen the research field of precision nutrition of marine fish, continue to overcome difficulties, and promote the transformation, upgrading and healthy and sustainable development of the aquaculture industry in the mainland.
