As we all know, the brothers Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu were born from the Runan Yuan clan, which is a large family, the ancestors of the Runan Yuan clan came from the descendants of the Chen royal clan of the Western Zhou princely state, and the Chen royal clan was the descendant of Emperor Shun, and by the Spring and Autumn period, the thirteenth grandson of the Chen royal clan took the name of the ancestor as a surname and changed his surname to Yuan, becoming the ancestor of the Yuan clan of Runan. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, it was precisely because of the origin of the fourth and third dukes that Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu each gathered a group of talents and became vassals of the secessionist side.
Correspondingly, Yang Xiu, who Cao Cao got rid of, and the Hongnong Yang clan behind him, were also very prominent big families at that time. So, the question is, who has the higher gold content between Yuan Shao of the fourth and third dukes and Yang Xiu of the fourth and third dukes?
One
On the one hand, as far as the Yuan clan of Runan, where Yuan Shao is located, from Yuan Liang to his grandson Yuan An to Sikong and Situ, this opened the history of the fourth and third dukes. After Yuan An's death, his sons Yuan Chang and Yuan Jingjing held the official position of Sikong in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Yuan Jing's son Yuan Tang was Sikong and Taiwei, and Yuan Tang's son Yuan Feng also served as Sikong.
As for Yuan Feng's younger brother Yuan Kui, he ascended to the third ducal position earlier than his brother Yuan Feng, and served as a lieutenant and dowager of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Among them, Taifu belonged to the Shanggong, that is, the status was even higher than that of the Third Duke, such as Sima Yi who later served as Cao Wei's Taifu. However, because the Yuan brothers raised troops against Dong Zhuo, the latter killed the Yuan Kui family, which weakened the Yuan family to a certain extent.
In general, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, there were as many as five people in the fourth generation of the Yuan clan in Runan, so they were known as the "fourth and third dukes".
Two
On the other hand, as far as Yang Xiu's Hongnong Yang clan was concerned, Yang Chang, the first ancestor of the Hongnong Yang clan, was the minister of the Han Zhao Emperor and Sima Qian's son-in-law. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, Yang Zhen was promoted to Situ in the first year of Yongning (120). In the second year of Yanguang (123), he replaced Liu Kai as a lieutenant.
Yang Zhen's son Yang Bingyu was promoted to imperial lieutenant in the fifth year of Yanxi (162). As for Yang Bing's son Yang Ci, in the third year of Yu Jianning (169), he worshipped Guanglu Dafu and was promoted to Situ. In the fifth year of Mitsuwa (182), he was promoted to imperial lieutenant.
After Yang Ci's death, his son Yang Biao was already a relatively familiar historical figure. In September of the sixth year of Zhongping (189), Yang Biao succeeded Dong Zhuo as Sikong as Taizhong's doctor. In December of the same year, Yang Biao succeeded Huang Wan as Situ. In July of the first year of Xingping (194), Yang Biao replaced Zhu Cong as a lieutenant and recorded Shangshushi. As a result, Yang Biao alone took all the posts of the three dukes, which is relatively rare in the history of the Han Dynasty.
Of course, Yang Biao's son Yang Xiu not only failed to maintain his glory, but was eliminated by Cao Cao, which led to the decline of the Hongnong Yang clan during the Three Kingdoms period.
Three
Compared with the Yuan clan of Runnan and the Yang clan of Hongnong, although they can be said to be the fourth and third dukes, Yang Chang of the Hongnong Yang clan served as the minister as early as the Western Han Dynasty, which was a more powerful official position than the three dukes (Sikong, Situ, and Taiwei). On the other hand, the Yuan clan of Runan only became the third prince from the Eastern Han Dynasty.
At the same time, among the three princes, the imperial lieutenant was slightly higher in status than Sikong and Situ because he was nominally in charge of the soldiers and horses. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Yang Zhen, Yang Ci, and Yang Biao all held the position of imperial lieutenant, which increased the gold content of the Hongnong Yang clan. Therefore, the same fourth and third princes, Hongnong Yang clan has a larger time span and relatively high gold content.
Four
Finally, and more crucially, with the demise of the two great princes Yuan Shu and Yuan Shao, the Yuan clan of Runan did not continue to prosper. Correspondingly, the glory of the Hongnong Yang clan bloomed during the Southern and Northern Dynasties and the Sui Dynasty. During the Western Jin Dynasty, Yang Jun served as a dowager, and together with his brothers Yang Yao and Yang Ji, he was known as "Three Yangs". As for Yang Yan and Yang Zhi, they successively became the first and second empresses of Sima Yan, the emperor of Jin Wu.
Yang Tongji was a famous general in the Eastern Jin Dynasty who repeatedly repelled Former Qin's attacks. As for Emperor Yang Jian of Sui, it is believed that Yang Jian was from the Hongnong Yang clan of Gaomen in Guanzhong, who claimed to be the grandson of Yang Zhen, the fourth lieutenant of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and his fourth ancestor Yang Yuanshou was appointed by Northern Wei as the Sima of Wuchuan Town, and his father Yang Zhong was a minister of Western Wei and Northern Zhou, and was created the Duke of Suiguo during the reign of Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou. Therefore, the view that "the Yang clan of the world is out of Hongnong, and the Yang clan of Hongnong is all over the world" has been formed in history.
