Authorities said an American woman was killed in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas on Tuesday afternoon.
A family of five from the Lake Erie region of Pennsylvania is on a snorkeling trip in the waters northwest of Rose Island when a 58-year-old woman was attacked by a bull shark shortly before 3 p.m. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, local time.

Police said the travel agency and family tried unsuccessfully to rescue the woman. According to police, the victim was seriously injured on the left side of her body and transported by tourist boat to Monta Castle on the east coast of nearby New Providence Island, where she was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel.

The victim was identified by her employer, Caroline DiPlacido, a program coordinator at the Gannon University Office of Community and Government Relations in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The university said in a statement: "Carolyn shows strong kindness and friendship to colleagues, students and the wider community, and values many family relationships with Gannon. "The news is devastating and she'll be missed."

According to the school's statement, Di Placido, who graduated from the university in 1986, left behind her husband and three children.
Police said the victim and his family arrived in the Bahamas on Tuesday morning on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Harmony.

Royal Caribbean confirmed in a statement that the woman was a guest on a seven-night cruise departing from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday.
According to the Miami-based cruise line, she was attacked by a shark while on an "independent coastal excursion" in Nassau and died from her injuries at a local hospital.
In a statement on Tuesday, the company said: "Royal Caribbean will provide support and assistance to the loved ones of its guests during this difficult time. ”
In June 2019, an American tourist snorkeling on Rose Island was killed in a shark attack. The victim was Jordan Lindsey, a 21-year-old Loyola-Marymount university student, who died after a swarm of sharks attacked her.
