According to Global News, the change in itinerary came at the last minute, with the MSC Meraviglia scheduled to depart from New York last Saturday.

The MSC Meraviglia left New York last Saturday as planned, heading first to Boston, Massachusetts. The ship docked there for three days.
This Wednesday, the cruise ship is scheduled to arrive in Portland, Maine. On Thursday, visitors crossed into Canada and docked at the Port of Saint John in New Brunswick.

But for many travelers who are eager to get out, the opportunity comes too late. Lakeya Allen and Val Montgomery, two close friends, told Good Morning America that they had arrived in Brooklyn with their families when they received the news of the cruise ship's reroute.
Allen said she was "devastated" by the change in holiday plans. She added that the voyage was a Christmas present for her children.
"We're from Chicago, so we wanted to switch," she said. "I never thought we'd go back to cold weather. ”
Montgomery told NBC News that when she learned the ship wasn't going to the Bahamas, she thought she had been "scammed."
Allen said that because they only brought beachwear, she had to rush to Walmart at the last minute to buy warmer clothes for her three children.

After the cruise departed, Allen shared a video taken on MSC Meraviglia in which travelers, like her, managed to make the most of the holiday. In a video posted on TikTok, it was seen that it was cold, with some passengers standing on the deck in overcoats and hats, while others braved the cold to swim in the outdoor pool.
It's unclear how many passengers boarded the cruise ship, which was diverted in Brooklyn. According to the MRC website, Meraviglia can accommodate 5,624 passengers and 1,608 staff.
