Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave a harsh assessment of his side's 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night, acknowledging the Reds needed to "reinvent" themselves and improve in "almost every way".
As a team, Liverpool's performances are incredible. Jogomez did so poorly in the first half that he was withdrawn at halftime, while Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to have little interest. Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk were also unusually bad, and Klopp even lost patience with Mohammed Salah an hour after the game started.
- Napoli 4-1 Liverpool:
"It looks like we need to reinvent ourselves. Lots of things are missing. We have to try to find a setting that does a better job in almost every way," Klopp admitted in post-match media accusations.
"When you see the game, it's not hard to explain. Napoli played a very good game and we didn't. This is the first explanation. Neither the defensive or offensive end is compact. Before Thiago came on the pitch, I don't remember a single counter-attack. We were too wide. ”
Looking ahead to the weekend, Klopp also said: "In three days, we will play against Wolves. When they see the game, they may be laughing too much to stop. They probably think that's the best time [to play Liverpool]. I would say it was the perfect moment. "After a mixed result in pre-season, the loss to Napoli means Liverpool have failed to win five of their eight games in all competitions so far in the 2022/23 season – including a final victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield in July.
