As taxonomists continue to fill gaps in the web of life, they sometimes indulge in a little star culture. A good example is the recent Nannaria Swiftae, a brand new millipede named after American singer/pop songwriter Taylor Swift.

Nannaria swiftae is one of 17 millipede species this year, all of which live in the Appalachian mountains, an ancient mountain system along the eastern region of North America. Derek Hennan, the lead author of the report describing and detailing the species of Nannaria Swiftae, happens to be a fan of Taylor Swift's work.

Hennen collected new millipede samples from multiple locations in Tennessee. Any Swift admirer knows it all too well, and the iconic performer spends a lot of time in the state writing songs and recording some of his favorite songs.

In his report, Dr. Henne made his own practice a special case. Nannaria swiftae, he said, was "a crack in the inner flange of Acropodite with two small bumps, similar to N. Simple bulges of austricola species, or N. Scutellaria species are narrow and have different pointed triangular parts. The inner flange of the Acropodite checkpoint is missing, not N. The bulge of the austricola species, or N. The triangular shape of the scutellaria species.

In other words, what he's saying is that Nannaria swiftae is a distinctive species similar to a millipede — but they're not related to each other. In some respects, they differed and were never linked again.

More brand new species described in 2022

According to discover Wildlife's report, researchers have found more creatures. And some animals seem to be realistic versions of Darwin's wildest dreams.

The newly discovered snakes, frogs, trees, giant salamanders, fish, orchids, scorpions, and – our most important giant slugs – all received the corresponding attention. The giant keel-backed slug (Limax pseudocinereoniger) is up to 20 centimeters long. If slugs are on a rafting expedition along the Tara Canyon in the Montenegro region, where scientists first discovered the species, it might be hard to get rid of them.
