These four historical paintings of several ethnic groups in Afghanistan, made more than 200 years ago in 1815, depict the Pashtuns, Tajiks, Uzbeks and Hazaras encountered by the then British envoy Mountstuart Elphinstone and his team of diplomats during their visit to the Durrani Empire.

As can also be seen in the picture, the Pashtuns have a relatively high status and ride a horse.

More than 100 years later, on August 19, 1919, on this day in history, Afghanistan gained its independence after defeating the British third invasion and designated this day as Afghanistan Independence Day.
