Early life

Christian Bell was born in 1974 in Haverford West, Pembrokeshire, Wales, England. His mother was a circus actor and his father was an entrepreneur, business pilot and agent.

Bell has three sisters who once said, "I was born in Wales, but I'm not Welsh — I'm British."

Bell spent his childhood in Wales, Surrey, England, Dorset and Portugal. He acknowledges that frequent relocations have had a big impact on his career choices. He attended Bournemouth School but left at the age of 16.

Bell studied the work of actor Gary Oldman, calling him "the reason I acted" when he first appeared in public in a 1982 ad for Lenor. A year later, he filmed an ad for Pac-Man cereal, playing a child rock star. In 1984, he made his debut with Rowan Atkinson in Nerds in London's West End. Bell's parents divorced in 1991. His mother and sister live in Bournemouth. At the age of 17, Bell moved with his father to Los Angeles, California.

Acting career

At the age of 13, Bell made his debut role in Steven Spielberg's war film Empire of the Sun (1987). Later, he played leading roles and supporting roles in films such as Little Women (1994) and Windswept (1995).

Ten years later, he gained wide recognition for his role as serial killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000). Bell lost 29 kilograms for his role in the psychological thriller The Mechanic (2004). In six months, he gained 45 kilograms and starred in Christopher Nolan's film Batman: The Mystery of the Shadow (2005), in which he played Batman, who re-starred as Batman in the film sequels The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).

Bell has starred in several films, including Nolan's Deadly Magic (2006), the Westerns Dueling Yuma (2007), the sci-fi film Terminator 2018 (2009), the crime film Enemy of the Public (2009) and The Thirteen Dragons of Jinling (2011).

Bell played Dickie Ecky Ecklund in the biographical film The Gladi (2010) directed by David O. Russell, for which he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. He was nominated for An Oscar for Russell's black comedy American Hoax (2013), Adam McKay's satirical films The Big Short (2015) and Vice President (2018). Bell won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role as Dick Cheney. He played racing driver Ken Miles in James Mangold's King of Speed (2019) and will play Butcher Gore in Thor 4: Love and Thunder (2022).

Personal life

Bell is a supporter of the Guardians of the Oceans, Greenpeace and the World Wide Fund for Nature, and was granted U.S. citizenship in 2014. Bell married Sandra in 2000 and they had two children.
