Suzuki exited China too soon? The next generation of Swifts begins testing

As a very important member of Suzuki's product line, the new Swift will carry out a small upgrade of the design and configuration on the existing model. At the same time, potential hybrid models will make up for the lack of pure electric versions to some extent.

The Suzuki Swift is a small Japanese car family that we are quite familiar with: leaving aside the antelope of the earlier years, the globally unified version of the first generation swift (codenamed RS) was domestically produced in 2005 and was produced in one go until Suzuki withdrew from China in 2018.

Internationally, especially in Southeast Asia and South Asia, Suzuki is clearly doing better. The Swift continues to be updated as one of the brand's main models, with the release of the third-generation model at the end of 2016.

After a few years, now the next generation of Swift has surfaced, and its development code name is YED. We had our first encounter with its test car on a hot day. Suzuki will officially release the new generation swift in 2023, which will use a new version of the HEARTECT platform that has been further improved, rather than the HEARTECT B platform on the current model. The new platform meets the stricter safety requirements of the future with more high-strength steel and more rational force transmission paths. At the same time, in terms of internal and external design and configuration, the new generation of Swift will also keep up with the trend as much as possible.

Although it has been tightly camouflaged, we can still see that the test car in the photo has a completely new design, its flat straight stripe and curved body are quite a bit of MINI flavor, and the shorter front and rear overhangs look sporty. At the front of the car, the grille will be redesigned, and a mussel-shell bonnet with a nearly flush opening will be used. The new front LED lights were changed to round. The door handles of the current model on the C-pillar will be moved to their regular positions. The tail of the next-generation Swift, whether it is the silhouette or taillights, luggage compartment cover and bumper, these details are almost the same as the current model.

As a stylish model, its color choices will become more colorful, and it should be like the recently released small remodel model, which can provide a two-color body solution.

Current Swift interior

Inside the car, the cab will feature a new centre console design and the craftsmanship and materials of the interior will also be improved, but considering that the platform is only an improvement and not a brand new one, there will be no major changes to its overall layout. In addition, the next generation of Swift will be equipped with new in-vehicle interconnection and driver assistance systems, and the 7-inch touch screen that is currently only available in the top model may become the standard configuration of the entire series.

The car's powertrain is still expected to feature a 1.4T engine with a mild hybrid system, which has a power of 140 horsepower on the current model. There is also news that a strong hybrid version is under development, but it does not seem that a pure electric version will be launched at present. While there are some plug-in hybrid models labeled with Suzuki, they are actually products from partner Toyota, and it is unclear whether the next generation swift will adopt the technology. The high-performance Swift Sport, also known as the "Swiftwing", is expected to be launched six months to one year after the release of the regular version.

Unfortunately, like the Jimney Long we've introduced before, suzuki's fun little cars don't seem to intersect with us at the moment – unless they're imported in parallel.
