Basking sharks are large oceanic sharks of the family Basking Shark family. The body is greyish brown and the ventral surface is white. Each fin is light grey-brown. It is the second largest filter shark in the world after the whale shark. The body length is generally 7-8 meters, and the larger one can reach 15 meters. Basking sharks inhabit the open seas of continental sheds and island sheds , but are often found on shores , outside the intertidal zone , or in inner bays. It is most commonly found in mild coastal waters. It is found in China in the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the northeastern part of Taiwan.
Basking sharks usually swim slowly on the surface of the water in groups of 1-3 or up to 100, with their dorsal fins exposed to the surface of the water or turning over to bask in the belly. Filter feeding, feeding on planktonic invertebrates, small fish or fish eggs. It has seasonal migratory habits. May be oviparous.
Basking shark is very mild, so it is called basking shark, it mainly feeds on planktonic invertebrates and small fish, its feeding method is very peculiar, first open the mouth and bait with water swallowed, and then filtered with slender gill raker sieve.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is preparing to implement a plan to develop an international shark fisheries management strategy for a wide range of sharks, including basking sharks.
