Purple-leaved barberry, also known as red-leaved barberry, is a deciduous shrub of the barberry genus in the family Barberry family, and is a natural variant of the Japanese barberry. The young branches are pale reddish with green and hairless, while the old branches are dark red with stripes. The leaves are diamond-shaped ovate, 5–20 mm long and 3–15 mm wide, blunt at the apex, extended into a short stalk at the base, full margin, diamond-shaped or inverted ovate, purple to bright red, and slightly pale dorsal color. The flowers are 2-5 in clusters with short peduncles and nearly clusters of umbel-shaped inflorescences, or clusters without a total stem, and the flowers are yellow. The berries are red, oval in shape, about 10 mm long, slightly shiny, and contain 1-2 seeds.

Barberry leaf barberry is adaptable, light-loving, semi-shade-tolerant, but some leaves will return to green when the light is slightly worse or the density is too large.
