- The Acropolis, located in Athens, the capital of Greece, is one of the most famous acropolises (fortress cities). The Acropolis is made of flat-topped rocks and is located at an altitude of 157 meters. The early acropolis stretched from the plains of Attica to steep cliffs, surrounded on three sides by cliffs. One can only walk up from the west, where a lower ridge connects to Mount Areopagus. After entering the Bronze Age (4000 BC), the Mycenaean McCaron was built on top of a hill and was inhabited by mycenaean monarchs, where their families, guards, devotees, craftsmen and commoners lived. In 480 BC, it was razed and burned down along with ancient temples and other stone buildings during the Persian invasion during the Persian War. After the war, the Athenians re-planned it. Between 460 BC and 430 BC, the great Athenian sculptor Phidias, together with two famous architects, Ektinus and Calikrate, was responsible for the reconstruction. In the 5th century BC, the Acropolis of Athens was finally formed.
