It is undoubtedly puzzling to know that the MK-6 mine was developed by the United States more than a hundred years ago and was originally designed in 1917.
To know that the core design of a hundred years ago, is far from the development of modern mines, it is no wonder that it will be ridiculed by the United States, obviously there are various new mines that can be supplied and used, but still use such old mines, such an intriguing approach.
Just at the beginning of this year, Taiwan set up two mine-laying boat squadrons for the first time, before that, the Taiwan military's mine-laying operations on the sea were manually launched by the Navy in landing craft, it can be said that the mine-laying effect is seriously low, this is not between 2020 and 2021, the Taiwan Navy has been equipped with four rapid mine-laying boats, which can achieve automatic mine-laying systems, and also claims that this will become part of the confrontational asymmetric combat strength.
This is not after the establishment of the mine-laying squadron, the Taiwan military has also entered the training of strengthening "mine-laying operations", before the automatic mine-laying, it is necessary to hang the mine to the mine-laying track, and then control the automatic mine-laying system, so as to complete the loading operation of the mine.
This training, the MK-6 Type 15 mine was used.
Mines are explosive weapons deployed in the water, once the ship has a mechanical collision, or other non-contact factors, such as water pressure, noise, etc., will directly explode, thereby attacking the enemy ship, can blow the ship to no combat capability, or even sink.
Because mines are powerful, inexpensive, simple to deploy, and flexible, they will appear in many asymmetrical operations, be welcomed, and today's mines are more diverse, and they can also be equipped with combat modules.
The MK-6 Type 15 is equipped with switching antennae, that is, when a ship hits any of these antennas, it can detonate mines and attack.
The Taiwan Navy also said that because Taiwan is surrounded by the sea, the sea line of communication is an extremely important existence, and even the key to maintaining survival, and the importance of mine-laying operations is extremely high for the main points of wartime continuation operations.
For this reason, after the establishment of a new mine-laying squadron in Taiwan, the Taiwan authorities blew the mine-laying boats in service quite badly.
Pointing out that this kind of mine-laying boat can withstand the wind and waves, the speed and flexibility of the mine-laying boat, etc., a bunch of praise words began to pile on the mine-laying boat.
Of course, it is understandable to keep pace with the times and update the equipment, but what is incomprehensible is that under this new equipment, it is the MK-6 mine developed a hundred years ago.
At the time of World War II, the MK-6 mine was widely used in the hands of the U.S. Navy, and made great achievements, and it was also the longest-serving mine in the United States.
At that time, the U.S. Navy approved the development and construction of 100,000 MK-6 mines, just to change the situation, it can be equipped with 272 pounds of TNT explosives, for the warships at that time, such a mine power, is unbearable.
It should be known that mines are usually several fixed-point distances, regionally laid, for which hitting a mine is likely to cause multiple mines in a certain area to be blasted, then even if it is a warship formation, it may be "killed" in the "Mine Sea".
Later, however, newer mines were introduced, and the United States had more powerful weapons, and the demand for mines was decreasing.
However, compared with the United States, Taiwan's MK-6 mine is obviously in service for a longer time, even if the mines are often refurbished, but overall, the main key design has not changed much, so its performance can be imagined.
From here, we can also see that Taiwan is indeed more dependent on outdated weapons, but this sudden enhancement of mine-laying combat capabilities is also worth our vigilance, but to say that we feel that we can block the Mainland People's Liberation Army, it is really not self-sufficient.
